How Cremation Compares to a Traditional Burial

Oct 22, 2018

Deciding between burial and cremation isn’t an easy task. There’s plenty to consider, and you’ll likely want to think through some costs and benefits in advance.

One of the most basic decisions one must make regarding their permanent resting place is whether to be buried or cremated. Much of the decision has to do with the most personal of preferences, but there are real advantages associated with either option. Speaking with a funeral director may make the choice a bit easier and clarify exactly what’s at stake. For example, if you’re interested in cremation services in or near Waverly, IN, there are specialists who can handle your questions and concerns in a professional and caring fashion. In the meantime, reading up on the various issues involved may be the best way to prepare yourself for such a conversation.

In any economy, one of the most basic considerations is cost. In most cases, a direct cremation is the most cost-effective option available. For one thing, you may wish to avoid a memorial service, wake or viewing. This is often the case when one decides to be cremated. By comparison, traditional burials tend to be more expensive.

The first cost to consider with respect to burial is the casket itself. Though an urn can conceivably rival a casket in expense, this often isn’t the case. There are also any number of alternatives to expensive urns that may be viewed as entirely acceptable, particularly if one plans on having ashes scattered after cremation. Burials also tend to include some kind of viewing for those who wish to see their dearly beloved one last time. That leads to expenses associated with embalming or otherwise handling the body in some kind of cosmetic fashion.

While one can certainly have cremated remains interred, that isn’t necessary. A traditional burial, on the other hand, will generally include the cost of a cemetery space and grave marker. By the time all is said and done, a traditional burial can certainly become more expensive—potentially trading off with money that might be spent on some kind of funeral service.

That said, money isn’t everything. It’s worth remembering that cremation is environmentally friendly, may provide more time to prepare a memorial service for friends and family and creates a number of options when it comes to what’s done with the ashes themselves. They can be displayed, scattered, interred or treated in more unconventional fashion, as well (diamonds anyone?). To be sure, not everyone loves the idea of cremation. Without a body available for viewing, it may make it more difficult for some to attain closure. Some religions also oppose the practice.

At the end of the day, this should be a very personal decision. After all, it’s permanent and will affect how others remember the deceased. One’s last wishes should generally be pretty clear about what’s expected.
