Barbara Doehr, age 84, passed away on July 24th, 2015 in Mooresville, Indiana.
Barbara enjoyed a long and fulfilling life, starting with her career in nursing. She worked for over 20 years in nursing homes, rising to night supervisor. She developed many lifelong friendships along the way, including her bowling team, members of a neighborhood card club, her sorority Beta Sigma Phi, her “Ya-Ya Sisterhood”, and co-workers. She also maintained close relationships with many of her relatives and in-laws over the years.
One of Barbara’s joys was spending time at the family cabin in northern Minnesota, where the family went nearly every weekend while her children were growing up. Favorite activities included cooking, after-dinner canoe paddling with her husband, and slow circuits of the shoreline in the pontoon boat.
Barbara had a wonderful sense of humor, which was on display for events and work or with family and often included her poetry. She never took herself too seriously and taught her children that lesson well. She also enjoyed card games such as cribbage and took up bingo in her later years in senior living. She was a deeply caring person, which was reflected in her relationships with co-workers, residents, and their families while she was working in a nursing home. It also gave her the perspective that made her a popular resident once she moved into a nursing care facility herself, as she understood things from the staff side as well. She was Resident Council president for several years as well as on the food committee, resulting in several new menu items not often seen in extended care nursing facilities such as crme brle.
She is survived by her sons Dane Doehr of Indianapolis, IN and Brett Doehr of Plymouth, MN; her daughters Lisa Riedl (George) of North Aurora, IL and Linda Cannon (Mark) of Mooresville, IN; and her grandchildren Ryan Cannon, Thomas Cannon, and Clara Riedl. She was predeceased by her parents Ernest and Mabel Bockoven, her husband of 49 years Verdain Doehr, and her sister Marilyn Hyma. She passed with family at her side, knowing the love of an extended family and wonderful friends.
