Donald E. Helmick, Sr.
79, of Martinsville, passed away on November 17, 2024, at Brown County Health & Living. Don was born on May 2, 1945 in Ft. Knox, Kentucky to the late Edward Helmick and Pasha (Throckmorton) Helmick.
Don proudly and honorably served in the U.S. Navy 1964- 1968 on the USS Randolph during the Vietnam War. Upon returning home from service, Don worked for the U.S. Postal Service from 1969- 2000. Also during this time in the 1980’s he worked security for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway as a famed “yellow shirt”. He became a member of the Old Timers Club in 2017. However, retirement didn’t suit Don. He then drove a shuttle and limo service for the Bloomington Hospital. An avid sports fan, he loved all things racing, attending many Indianapolis 500’s, Brickyard 400’s and Daytona 500’s. He was also a dire hard New York Yankees fan and was able to attend a game to see Hall of Famer Derek Jeter play before his retirement. He was a member of the Hoosier Harvest Church and the American Legion Post #230 in Martinsville. He will be remembered as a doting great grandfather, who loved life and loved his family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter Lisa Garrard, and his twin brother Ronald Helmick.
He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Michelle (Lewandowski) Helmick; son Don Helmick, Jr.; daughter Kia (husband, Eddie) Moorman; stepson Jeremy Stevens; grandchildren Justin (wife, Skye Shipley) Helmick, Skylar Wachs, Kameron Moorman, Lorinne Helmick, Paisha Moorman, and 4 great grandchildren, who will all miss him dearly.

Additional visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 27th from 10am-11am, with the funeral service beginning at 11am Wednesday in the funeral home. Burial will follow the services with military honors in White Lick Cemetery, Mooresville.
