Earl G. Anderson, Jr., 97, Indianapolis, passed away peacefully at home August 13, 2017. Mr. Anderson was born May 24, 1920, in Rockford, Illinois, to the late Earl G. Anderson, Sr. and Elsie Claire (Hall) Anderson. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Geraldine (Weitzel) Anderson.
Mr. Anderson attended Northwestern University. A decorated World War II Veteran and POW, Mr. Anderson served in the Army Air Corp in Manduria, Italy. He flew B-24 planes and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross before being shot down on his 50th mission and survived nearly a year as a POW. He was very active in the Indy Air Show and was instrumental in revitalizing the golf outing that raised thousands of dollars for Riley Children’s Hospital. Mr. Anderson was a member of the Service Club and was an avid golfer. A natural people person, he taught Dale Carnegie classes for 35 years. Earl will be fondly remembered by his loving family and many friends.
Mr. Anderson worked as an engineer for General Motors for 42 years, retiring in 1981.
Survivors include two daughters, Barb Oliver (Bob) of Indianapolis and Marilyn Krenzke (Brian) of Carmel; brother, Gordon William Anderson of California; five grandchildren, Christopher (Elena) Oliver, Brian (Susie) Oliver, Matt Krenzke, Paul (Kady) Krenzke, and Andrea (Jeff) Wiklund; seven great grandchildren, Mason, Sophie, Nikolas, Anna, Lila, Kai, and Emily.
A private celebration of life will be held. Earl will be inurned at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery, followed by military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital
