Edwin J. Kurek, 94, Monrovia, passed away peacefully August 9, 2017, at The Gathering Together in Plainfield. Mr. Kurek was born January 19, 1923, in Chicago, to the late Marion and Caroline (Pac) Kurek. He was also preceded in death by his step-mother, Helen (Gorz) Kurek; his beloved wife of 70 years, Lauretta (Fabianski) Kurek; and one brother, Jerry Kurek.
Ed grew up in Chicago and proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II on the USS Cowell. He attended the Illinois Institute of Technology and was a respected mechanical engineer during his career. He was employed at Jenn-Air and retired from Mechanical Contractors Association of Indiana. A longtime member of the American Society of Heating Refrigerating & Air Conditioning Engineers, Mr. Kurek was also a HVAC instructor at Ivy Tech. Ed was a skilled carpenter and woodworker, donating several projects including altars and poor boxes to the church. Most recently, he was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Mooresville and had also been a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Indianapolis and St. Michael Catholic Church in Hicksville, Ohio. He and Lauretta were active in CFM, the Christian Family Movement through the years. They never knew a stranger, and their door was always open. Ed will be fondly remembered by a loving and caring family.
Survivors include sons, Robert J. Kurek (Anne) of Maine, Paul Kurek (Marilyn) of Marion, Indiana, James Kurek (Linda) of Dayton, Ohio; daughters, Kathryn Kluge (Dan) of Minnesota, Suzanne Merrell (Tim) of Whiteland, and Patricia Miller (Les) of Monrovia; sister, Lorraine Kroll of Illinois; 22 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren.
Friends and family will gather on Saturday, August 12, 2017, 10 a.m. until 12 Noon in St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 1200 N. Indiana Street, Mooresville. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12 Noon. Interment will follow in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Hall. Memorial contributions to The Gathering Together, 147 N.
