Eugene W. “Gene” VanHook, 75 of Mooresville, passed away July 28, 2016 at Franciscan St. Francis Health in Indianapolis. He was born June 14, 1941 in Indianapolis to the late Howard W. and Frances A. (Branson) VanHook. On June 12, 1966 Gene was united in marriage to his wife, Elva L. (Norton) VanHook; she survives.
A jack of all trades, Gene worked in the service industry for various companies over the years; most recently he worked at Ace Hardware in Mooresville. He was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Mooresville. Gene was proud to serve his country in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a member of the American Legion in Mooresville. He was a master gardener, enjoyed camping and most recently enjoyed working with stained glass. A selfless servant of God, Gene was known for cleaning snow off his neighbor’s driveways and volunteered at Homeless Veterans of American.
Along with his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brother, Richard VanHook; a grandson, Jackson and a sister, Eva Thompson.
Survivors include his loving wife of 50 years, Elva; three sons, Jonathan M. (Brooke Kenley) VanHook of Rockville, Jeffrey W. (Kristina) VanHook of Lizton and David L. (Earthy) VanHook of Hope, Kansas; two Sisters, Alice Plemons of Greencastle and Carolyn Barker of Pasadena, Texas; 10 grandchildren, Zachary, Alex, Nicolas, Katelin, Gavin, Zaiden, Paxton, Mya, Allen and David; and one great granddaughter, Autumn.
Family and friends will gather to celebrate the life of Gene VanHook from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 31, 2016 in the Chapel at Carlisle-Branson Funeral Service & Crematory in Mooresville. Rev. Guy Lancour will conduct the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Poplar Grove Cemetery in Marshall, Indiana.
