George Mizia

George Mizia, 69, of Martinsville, Indiana, formerly of Chicago, Illinois, died March 22, 2013, in St. Francis Hospital, Indianapolis. He was born March 27, 1943, in Chicago, to the late Albert George and Rose (Jurczewski) Mizia.

George worked as the director of security at St. Mary of Nazareth Hospital, Chicago for 26 years. Recently, he worked security at the Westin Hotel, Indianapolis. George was the past president of the Board of Greene Township Fire Department. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and VFW. He served two years in the Army during the Vietnam War and reenlisted for four years as an Army nurse recruiter. A fun loving character with a great sense of humor, George enjoyed driving and traveling through many states, attending festivals, golfing, and antiquing. Above all, George loved animals, especially his rescue fox terrier, Penny.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Frank Mizia; sister, Geraldine Mazur.

Survivors include his loving wife, Christine “Chris” M. (Lapinski) Mizia; to whom he was united in marriage on August 20, 1977; brother-in-law, Michael Lapinski (his wife, Pat); sister-in-law, Mabel Mizia; nephews, John, James, and Robert Mizia; nieces, Susan and Karen Mazur; many loved cousins and friends; and canine companion, Penny.

Funeral services will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, Morgan County Humane Society, or the C.A.R.E Animal Rescue, Columbus (www.care.rescuegroups.org/).
