Helen L. (Mayfield) Raney, 85, Mooresville, passed away peacefully on June 10, 2024. Mrs. Raney was born one of nine children to the late Alfred and Grace (Chaney) Mayfield on July 20, 1938, in Ano, Kentucky. She married Benjiman Marshel Raney on April 2, 1960, and he preceded her in death on September 25, 2015.
Helen grew up in Kentucky or as she affectionately referred to it, “down home”. She and Marshel moved to Indiana for work and began a family. Her vocation in life was that of a caregiver – a devoted wife, loving mother, proud grandmother, and beloved friend to many. Helen was a strong Christian lady deeply devoted to women’s and children’s ministry at Marwood Baptist Church where she was recognized for her decades of devoted service to children. Later she was a member of Bridgeport Central Baptist Church and was active in children’s ministry there. Most recently, Helen was a member of Gasburg Baptist Church.
Helen was an avid gardener and known for sharing her harvest. Whether you were a friend, family, the dentist, or a fellow church member, you were likely going to be the recipient of what Helen and Marshel had grown in their garden. She also canned and preserved food. Green beans, apple butter, frozen corn, and jelly were just some of the things she was known for. Helen was a wonderful cook and showed her love for others by being a generous and welcoming hostess. Sunday dinners were a staple in the Raney household, and you could always plan on a delicious dessert to wrap up the meal. Helen will be fondly remembered for her selflessness and caring nature.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Dexter Raney, and siblings, Wanda Baker, Bernadean Wells, Phyllis Whitaker, Willard Mayfield, Sherrill Mayfield, June Hall, Marvin Mayfield, and Jeane Harp.
Survivors include two sons, Benjamin Scott (Wife: Robin) Raney of Mooresville and Kevin Dwayne (Wife: Sharon) Raney of Martinsville; daughter, Stephanie Lynn (Husband: Shawn) Eldridge of Indianapolis; six grandchildren, Tyler (Wife: Aubrey) Raney, Grace Raney, Olivia Raney, Emma Eldridge, Hannah Raney and Luke Eldridge and three great-grandchildren, Adyson Cranfill, David Raney, and Dakota Raney.
