Mooresville, Indiana – James Ralph Gray Jr. passed away on January 14th, 2023, peacefully at home with his loving wife, Nancy Lee Gray by his side. Born in Nashville, Tennessee to parents James Ralph Gray and Rachel Irene (Gately) Gray on July 17th, 1945. He was 77 years old.
James was drafted out of high school, serving in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. After rejoining civilian life, he owned and operated his construction firm, Gray’s Construction, for nearly two decades.
After his time in the military, James spent several years building and racing stock cars or playing pool with friends. Also, an avid outdoorsman, James loved to hunt and fish and would often take his children with him.
In fact, the time he enjoyed the most though was the time spent with his family. An active and dutiful father, James taught all his children the same joy of spending time outdoors. As he grew older, he loved to take his grandchildren down to fish, where he could drive the family golf cart and spend time with them.
James is preceded in death by his parents, James and Rachel Gray; sister Linda Howell; grandchild Adam Miller; and nephew Chad Howell.
James is survived by his wife Nancy Lee (Thomas) Gray; sons James R. Gray III (Lili) and Justin Howard Gray (Whitney); daughter Melissa Bryant (Bill); sister Jeanette Long (Ken); grandchildren Fayelee, JJ, Colten Gray, Robert Miller, great-grandchildren Christian and Kaydin; and his beloved dog Bullet.
