Joan D. Saunders

Joan D. Saunders, 89, of Indianapolis, passed away on May 15, 2020 at St. Vincent Hospital, Indianapolis. Joan was born on December 23, 1930 in Greenup, Illinois to the late Dallas and Vinnie (Freeman) Shore.

Joan grew up in Greenup and graduated from Greenup High School in 1948. After high school, she attended Utterback Business College in Mattoon, IL, graduating in 1950. In addition to raising her family, she worked in the accounting department for FMC Bearing Division from 1972 to 1982.

She married the love of her life, Oren Saunders on June 3, 1951. They were married over 68 years. Joan and Oren enjoyed square dancing together, spending winters in Arizona and listening to Big Band music. She was preceded in death by her beloved Oren in March, earlier this year. Oren and Joan both enjoyed staying active throughout their lives and in retirement. She enjoyed working in the garden, doing cross stitch and traveling.

She will be missed by daughters Holly Saunders of Zionsville and Carol Jarrell (John) of Speedway. Other family members include her sister Diane Nickum (Charlie) of Robinson, Illinois; grand daughter Jennifer Riley (Rob) and Joan’s great grandson, Evan, as well as her other grand daughter, Laura Huffman (Jimmy Hughes).

According to her wishes she will be cremated and laid to rest at Maple Hill Cemetery, Plainfield, Indiana. Services will be held privately at a later date.

Cremation and final arrangements are entrusted to Carlisle Branson Funeral Service & Crematory, Mooresville.
