Johanna Roberta Cooning Lewis, 86, Indianapolis, passed away Friday, November 8, 2013. She was born September 13, 1927, in Indianapolis, to the late Leon and Ethel (Caylor) Cooning. She married the late Rilus M. Lewis in 1974.
She graduated from Arsenal Technical High School in 1945 and worked for 30 years at Indiana Bell, retiring in 1990 as a senior account clerk. She also taught Sunday School for many years at East 10th Street United Methodist Church. Joan was always the life of the party and always had a story to tell. She loved her family dearly and was a truly giving person.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Leon, Jr. and Jack Cooning.
Survivors include her twin brother, James Cooning (Grace) of Indianapolis; step daughters, Evelyn White (Lester) of Pendleton and Marietta Greene (Martin) of California; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will begin at 11 a.m., Tuesday, November 12, 2013, in the Carlisle – Branson Funeral Service & Crematory, Mooresville, with calling there from 10 a.m. Burial will be in Mt.
