John Dominic Sgro
85 of Waverly, passed away on February 3, 2022, at his home that he built, surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s. John was born on August 3, 1936 in Indianapolis, Indiana to the late Joseph Sgro and Mary (Giordano) Sgro.
John grew up on the eastside of Indianapolis, attending Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School, and Howe High School. He then enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, earning the rank of Private 1st Class and was honorably discharged in 1963.
John was a carpenter by trade and was a member of the Carpenter’s Union Local #301. Additionally, he owned and operated Midway Convenient Store in Waverly/Bargersville area and Design Custom Homes by Sgro.
He was a member of the Climb for Parkinson’s, Indianapolis Ski Club, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. John enjoyed staying active, boating, water skiing, snow skiing, hunting, fishing, sky diving, earned his private pilot’s license and made his own wine. His adventurous spirit will be missed by a loving family and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by brothers Joseph Sgro, Gino Sgro; sister Madeline DeFabis and a grandson Tipton Lyons.
He is survived by his wife, Renée (McComb) Sgro; children Cindi (Michael) Sgro-Tinsley, Gino (Stephanie) Sgro, Bryan (Ashley) Nuffer; sister Mary Louise Caporale; grandchildren Cecilia Lyons, Mindi Sgro, Daniel Schilling, Avery Hornaday, Kayden Nuffer, Farah Nuffer and 4 great grandchildren.
Family and friends will gather to celebrate John’s life on Saturday, February 12th from 10:30am-12pm at Carlisle Branson Funeral Service & Crematory, Mooresville, with services beginning at 12:00pm Saturday in the funeral home.
