John Thorton Winks, 77, of Mooresville, passed away at home after a long battle with cancer on September 15, 2017. John was born February 15, 1940, in Danville, Illinois, to the late Elwyn and Vivian Winks.
John was united in marriage to his loving wife Linda (Darlage) Winks on June 2, 1962. He was a graduate of Purdue University where he studied Forestry. John retired from Foley Hardwoods in 2011. He also proudly served in the United States Army. Throughout the years John was a Boy Scout leader with many leadership roles. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, and most of all spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. John will be greatly missed by his loving friends and family.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers, Elwyn Winks, Wendell Winks, and David Winks; sisters, Margaret Cotrim and Nadine McGaughey; a grandson, Tommy Brazzell.
Survivors include his wife Linda Winks; sons, Paul (Amy) Winks, Robert (Cheryl) Winks, Kevin (Theresa) Winks, Michael (Shannon) Winks, Chad (Melissa) Winks; daughter Stephanie (Scott) Edrington; grandchildren, John, Libby, Barry, Dean, Jessi, Robert, Mayme, Gennifer, Emma, Scott, Khalifa; 9 great grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews .
Friends and Family will gather to celebrate the life of John Thorton Winks on Tuesday, September 19, 2017, 4 to 8 p.m., in the chapel at Carlisle – Branson Funeral Service & Crematory. The funeral service will begin at 10 a.m., Wednesday, September 20, 2017 at Mt. Gilead Christian Church. The burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mt. Gilead Church Building Fund or to Hoosier Trails Counsel for the Boy Scouts.
