Lawrence P. "Larry" Smith

November 29, 1929 — May 19, 2019

Lawrence P. “Larry” Smith

89, of Plainfield, passed away on May 19, 2019 at Cumberland Trace in Plainfield. Larry was born on November 29, 1929 in Monongahela, PA to the late Wesley P. Smith and Edith Blanche (Marshland) Smith.

After high school, Larry honorably served his country in the US Navy during the Korean War. Upon returning home from the service, he went to work as a diesel mechanic at the Beech Grove Railyards, then later worked as a salesman for Sears for 22 years, before retirement. However, in 1963 he was faced with the challenge of raising four young sons on his own. In an era where single parenting was seldom heard of, he stepped up provided for and raised his four sons, who grew up to be successful men and good fathers in their own rite.

Later in life, he met Edna Palmer, through a family member that he worked with at Sears. Their friendship then blossomed into marriage on February 28, 1987. They were happily married for 32 years. Larry was a member of the Camby Community Church and a lifetime member of the VFW Post 1111 in Mooresville.

In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by his two brothers, two sisters and a stepdaughter Kathy Wallace.

Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife of 32 years, Edna (Palmer) Smith; sons Rickey L. Smith and his wife Cindy, William G. Smith and his wife Carol, Gerald M. Smith, Ronald R. Smith and his wife Anita; stepdaughter Jeana McGriffin and her husband Jack; son in law Jerry Wallace; 12 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Tuesday May 28th from 12-2pm at Carlisle Branson Funeral Service & Crematory, Mooresville, with funeral services beginning at 2pm on Tuesday at the funeral home, with Charlie Paxton officiating. Burial will follow the services in White Lick Cemetery, with military honors.
