Maurice Eugene Hensley, 90, lifelong Morgan County resident, passed away May 16, 2017. Mr. Hensley was born January 18, 1927, in Brooklyn, to the late E.L. “Bart” and Emma (Swineford) Hensley. Maurice graduated from Mooresville High School in 1944 and proudly served in the United States Army during World War II. He married Beth (Medsker) Hensley on June 13, 1954, and she survives.
Maurice worked for the Railway Mail Service and for the United States Postal Service for 42 years, retiring as the Mooresville Postmaster in 1987. He was also the owner of Hensley Coal & Oil and the owner of Jack & Jill Children’s Wear Shop.
He had been a member of the Mooresville First Christian Church since 1955 and served as Chairman of the Board, Financial Secretary, Treasurer, and Deacon. Maurice was a member and past president of the Mooresville Lions Club, past president of the Mooresville Chamber of Commerce, member of the Mooresville VFW Post 1111, and the Mooresville American Legion Post 103. He was named Mooresvillian of the Year in 1996 and honored in 2003 as a Distinguished Alumni of Mooresville High School.
Maurice was a train enthusiast and was a life-member, engineer, and past president of the Board of the Whitewater Valley Railroad. He was also a member of the Wescasett (Maine) Railroad Museum, and the Haley Tower Historical Society.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Ann Hensley.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Beth (Medsker) Hensley; daughters, Jane Ann Schnelle (Greg) of Eaton, Ohio and Janet Lynn Moritz (Scott) of Mooresville; grandson, Nicholas Schnelle (Brittany) of Key West, Florida; sister, Marilyn Miller of Mooresville; and niece Amy Miller.
The funeral service will begin at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 20, 2017, in the chapel at Carlisle – Branson Funeral Service & Crematory, with calling there from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 19, 2017. Burial will be in the Mooresville Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Whitewater Valley Railroad, PO Box 406, Connersville, IN 47331. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
