Paul J. Earles was born March 20, 1926, in Mintonville, Casey County, Kentucky. He was the son of Willie A. Earles and Bertha (Bell) Earles. Paul was the last of their eleven children. Paul’s brothers and sisters were Lee, Bessie, Audrey, twins Jim and George, Raymond, Edna, Ruby, Pauline, and Mildred. All of his siblings preceded him in death.
Willie was a school teacher and owned the local sawmill and general store. Bertha and the children all helped with the chores in both businesses. After her husband’s death in 1927, Bertha moved to Waverly, Indiana, with her children. She had a brother who lived there.
Paul attended schools locally including Walnut Grove and Waverly Elementary Schools, and later he attended Mooresville High School.
He married Alice L. Stanley on September 25, 1948. Paul worked at several Indianapolis businesses as a warehouseman and sales representative. Among his employers were Hamilton-Harris, Kipp Brothers, and Columbia Wholesale. He later worked as a security guard at Stewart-Warner and Hook Drug Co. He retired in 1988.
Paul played music all his life in several bands and in groups. He entertained his family and friends with his interpretations of popular country music. He taught his sons, grandsons and great-grandsons how to play guitar. One summer, a group he was in, The Country Sounds, played at the Indiana State Fair.
He enjoyed telling stories of his brothers and sisters. Paul especially liked traveling to his home state of Kentucky and visiting friends and relatives who still lived in the area.
Although he suffered from polio when he was in his early teens, Paul enjoyed playing baseball and other sports. In his later years, his post-polio syndrome kept him from participating in sports, but he enjoyed watching local sports teams on television.
He and Alice were active members of the local congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. They have lived nearly 45 years in their home on Fairlane Drive in Mooresville.
Paul and Alice had eight children. Paul Michael (Faith), Jack Randall, Paula LuAnn (Larry) Gambill, Myrna Cooke, Dane Jeffrey (Cathy), Kent Douglas (Holly), David Allen (Deneen), and Molly Ann (Austin) Brewer. Paul had 18 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
