Velma M. Birge, 75, Camby, passed away on June 21, 2024. Velma’s story began on September 27, 1948, in New Castle, Indiana, when she was born to the late Virgil Thornsberry, Sr. and Betty Pyles.
Velma attended high school in New Castle. She was introduced to a young man named Jerry Birge, and after a two-month courtship, the two were married in Indianapolis in May of 1970. Early on, Velma was a member of Pleasant Heights Baptist Church. Along with Jerry, she was the co-owner of Jerry’s Produce in Mars Hill for nearly 40 years. Velma could be rather competitive especially when playing cards. She loved to win when playing euchre, Rook, Skippo, and Phase 10. Velma was an animal lover and was known to provide refuge for animals that were in need of rescue. She would ensure that the animals had plenty to eat and the comforts they needed to flourish. Velma will be fondly remembered for her kindheartedness and loving nature.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Virgil Thornsberry, Jr.
Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Jerry R. Birge; daughter, Michelle “Shellie” (David) Johnson; granddaughter, Brittanie (Cameron) Brown; siblings, Pam (David) Mitchell, Gabby (Karen) Thornsberry, Ernie Thornsberry, and Wayne (Vanessa) Thornsberry.
Velma’s Life Celebration® visitation and memorial service will be held Wednesday, June 26, 2024, from 1 to 3 p.m., at the Carlisle – Branson Funeral Service & Crematory, Mooresville. The memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. Cremation will occur at the Morgan County Crematory, Mooresville, and the inurnment will take place later at West Newton Cemetery.
