Virgil “Harold” DeWitt, 89, Mooresville, passed away October 4, 2020. Mr. DeWitt was born December 23, 1930, in Crawford County, to the late Homer and Gladys (Newton) DeWitt.
Harold attended French Lick High School and proudly served in the United States Navy, just prior to the Korean War. Always with a strong work ethic, he worked early on at White Castle, P.R. Mallory. He made his career in insurance, working for more than 30 years at United Insurance Company of America. He was a member of the Mooresville Free Methodist Church. Harold enjoyed the outdoors – fishing, hunting, farming, and gardening. He was a great mentor to his children and grandchildren, always leading with great patience. He will be fondly remembered for his love for family and his positive and humble nature.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Delores (Palmer) DeWitt; daughters, Sheryl Cherry and Karen Harris; step-children, Alan McKinney and Vicki Vonderheid.
Survivors include his wife, Jean McKinney DeWitt, to whom he was united in marriage June 12, 1999; children, Tim (Sheri) DeWitt, Roger DeWitt, and Michael (Kathy) DeWitt; siblings, Darwin, Normalee, and Franci; twelve grandchildren; and a host of great grandchildren.
Friends and family will gather for visitation Thursday, October 8, 2020, 4 to 8 p.m., in the chapel at Carlisle – Branson Funeral Service & Crematory, Mooresville. The funeral service will begin at 10 a.m., Friday, October 9, 2020, at the funeral home. The committal service will follow at 2:30 p.m., in the Birdseye Cemetery, Birdseye, Indiana.
