Virgil R. Whitney, 83, Mooresville, formerly of Indianapolis, died February 2, 2014, in his residence. Mr. Whitney was born November 24, 1930 in Westmoreland, Tennessee, to the late Delbert and Virgie (Hopkins) Whitney.
He proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Mr. Whitney was a dedicated 38 year employee at Overhead Door, retiring as an electronic service technician. An accomplished builder and carpenter, he was also a member of the Carpenters’ Union.
Survivors include his wife, Betty (Starks) Whitney, to whom he was united in marriage March 31, 1956; children, Michael R. Whitney (Dawn) of Colorado, Kathy Puls (Michael) of Westfield, and Keith A. Whitney (Suzanne) of Georgia; siblings, James L. Whitney (Betty) of Indianapolis, Clara M. Smith of Indianapolis, Virginia “Gin” McDole (Kenneth) of Clayton, and Thomas E. Whitney (Emma) of Mooresville; grandchildren, Chris and Justin Flanagan, Olivia Whitney; great grandchildren, Austin, Alexis, and Aaron Flanagan.
The funeral service will begin at 11 a.m., Friday, February 7, 2014, in the Carlisle – Branson Funeral Service & Crematory, Mooresville, with calling there from 4 to 8 p.m., Thursday, February 6, 2014. Entombment will be in Lincoln Memory Gardens, Whitestown. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
