Wilma Free-Rusie, 95, of Mooresville, passed away on August 4, 2021 at The Springs of Mooresville. Wilma was born on February 16, 1926 in Oneco, Florida to the late Gladys Rebecca (Blunk) and W.O. “Slim” Denny.
A long-time resident of Mooresville, Wilma was a 1944 graduate of Mooresville High School. She worked as an office manager for many years for various doctor’s offices, most recently with Dr. James Moran’s office in Greenwood, where she retired. Strong in her faith, she was a charter member of the 50/50 Class, Sunday School Teacher, sang in the choir and was an 86-year member at The First Christian Church in Mooresville. Faith and family were very important to her. She stayed active in her community as a Past President of the PTO and headed the first Post Prom Celebration at Mooresville High School. She was also Past Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star Chapter #260.
In more recent years, she enjoyed traveling in her Airstream camper and camping at various state and National Parks. She especially enjoyed her trips out west to Colorado, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico to see the annual Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque and had seen 49 of the 50 states. She will be remembered as a kind, loving, happy spirit, who enjoyed sharing stories with her family. She will be greatly missed.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years Maurice Free. Later in life she married William Rusie, Jr, who passed in 2010. She is also preceded in death by her son Marc C. Free and a brother Mitchell Denny.
She is survived by her children Dr. Michael Free (Stephanie), Monica Miller (Dean), Marisa Sprinkle (Cameron); sister Evelyn Woods; grandchildren Dr. Laura Free, Brad Free, Nathan Free, Greg Free, Dr. Heather Fleming, Rhett Miller J.D., Thaddeus Miller, Hilary Miller, Joshua Ikerd, Caleb Ikerd, Hannah Ikerd, Jacob Ikerd and 8 great grandchildren.
Friends and family will gather on Sunday, August 8th from 12pm-2pm for Wilma’s Life Celebration at Carlisle Branson Funeral Service & Crematory, Mooresville, with services to begin at 2:00pm on Sunday in the funeral home. Burial will follow the services in White Lick Cemetery, Mooresville.
