If you aren’t thrilled with the prospect of a traditional burial, cremation may be a more attractive alternative than you think. For many, the only things standing in the way are questions. What does cremation involve? How would it differ from other arrangements? And what kind of logistics are entailed? If you interested in learning more about cremation services in Martinsville, IN, do know that there are available options prepared to better inform you in your bid to make such an important decision. Before speaking with a funeral director, however, you may wish to familiarize yourself with what cremation requires when the time comes.

As it turns out, there are a few things that go into making cremation possible.

The first step is getting various paperwork finalized. Once the deceased has passed, someone will need to obtain a death certificate from a doctor or medical examiner. The next-of-kin must also authorize cremation in writing. Finally, someone must obtain a creation permit, generally from the county itself. Once the paperwork is in order, it should be presented to the crematorium in a bid to schedule the cremation itself. Note that there may be some delays depending upon state mandated waiting periods, doctors signing the death certificate in a timely fashion, transportation of the deceased’s body or the possibility that authorities will delay cremation on behalf of investigators in the event there’s something unusual about the death itself. Cremated bodies cannot be exhumed after the fact.

Once the logistics have been covered, much then depends on last wishes and whether there will, for example, be an open-casket memorial service in advance of the cremation itself. It’s worth giving these matters some thought, though they may not ultimately have any significant impact on the timing and circumstances of cremation itself. For friends and family, however, a last chance to see the deceased may be important. In lieu of a funeral viewing, note that private viewings may also be arranged just prior to cremation itself. These generally accommodate just a few select friends or relatives.

The cremation process itself is pretty straightforward, generally involving a combustible casket and a furnace that will heat the body by way of open flame.

The next step may be of more interest to those considering cremation. What happens to the ashes once they’ve been properly processed?

There are a number of options, and of course you may be familiar with some of them thanks to the popularity of cremation in popular film or personal experiences you’ve previously had therewith. Much like a body, ashes may be buried. But there are certainly additional options, ranging from scattering them in a place of sentimental importance, displaying them in an urn or having them interred. The availability of these options of makes cremation a more attractive alternative for those who don’t relish the idea of remaining in a cemetery.
