Why Cremation Has Become So Popular

Nov 12, 2018

Cremation has become increasingly common in the United States, and that is no coincidence. People better understand the process and there are now fewer misconceptions.

It certainly isn’t your only option, but cremation has certainly become a more popular one in the United States. Once a rare afterthought, Americans are now increasingly turning to cremation as a credible and preferred solution. There is a reason for that. If you or someone you know is looking into cremations in Monrovia, IN, rest assured there are nearby professionals who can walk you through the process and address any questions or concerns you may have. Common as cremation has become, some misconceptions may still persist. You should know your options and enjoy a proper understanding thereof. Does cremation make sense for you and your family? Is it the best choice given the nature of your preferences and personality? Only you can answer many of these questions. In the meantime, it is important that you have some concept of what you’re dealing with. Increased knowledge about cremation has almost certainly had something to do with its growing popularity.

Cremation has long been a widespread practice around the globe. But just how common has cremation become in the United States?

Lisa Sherman explains for National Cremation that, “In 1960, only 3.6% of Americans chose cremation. The projected cremation rate for 2015 is astronomically higher at 48.2%. That’s a 1,238.88% increase in the number of people choosing cremation over a span of just 65 years.

According to the National Funeral Directors Association, the projected cremation rate will continue to rise in the coming years, with 55.8% of Americans expected to choose cremation in 2020 and 70.6% in 2030.”

Increased awareness of cremation has played an important role in this evolution. The Internet and word of mouth has eased a number of concerns some previously might have had. The more people learn, they more they find to like about cremation. But of course, there is more to it than that.

Sherman continues, explaining, “Experts cite demographics and economic factors as the largest elements, but they’re not the only ones. Environmental concerns, fewer religious prohibitions, a growing preference for personalized and less traditional services as well as our ability to prearrange our final needs are also contributing factors.”

Yes, economic factors rank among one of the primary reasons cremation has become more common. Unfortunately, many making these kinds of decisions must take their budget into account. That budget may not allow for a fancy casket and cemetery space. Some families may opt for a simply memorial service in lieu of an elaborate funeral service, as well. Cremation certainly works with those kinds of plans.

It is also true that many Christians once believed cremation might be problematic due to the inevitable resurrection of the body. This concern has eased in recent years, and many Christians opt for cremation regularly.
