Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Mr Hutchings was my US History teacher during my Junior year at Speedway High School and it was also his first year teaching there. I remember that he made the class very interesting and leaning fun. I also had him as our Assistant Wrestling Coach.

It wasn’t until several years later, after I graduated from Purdue that I learned that he was also a Boilermaker.

Go Plugs! Hail Purdue! Rest in Peace.

  2. He was a true gentleman. Someone you could look up to and learn from. May God give the family comfort and peace and strength in his passing.

  3. Mr. Hutchings was an excellent Government teacher during my time at Speedway High School. Learned so much from him and the building and maintaining of a government of the people.

  4. Joyce & I got to know Bruce after retiring from his teaching & administrative career at Speedway HS when he moved to our subdivision in Morgan County. His mannerisms and way he approached people & problems while participating in a working committee for our neighborhood was gentlemanly & effective. We will not forget his grace & association with others like ourselves. Phil & Joyce Probst

  5. Bruce Hutchings made an indelible impact on the lives of the students, fellow teachers, fellow coaches and friends who were fortunate enough to be a part of his world. He was a thoughtful and kind man and was beloved by the Pollard family for over 40 years. Rest in peace.

  6. He was a gentle man, he was a good teacher, he was a very caring human being. In my freshman year at Speedway in 1966-1967, I wrenched my neck very badly in a wrestling match. For 2 straight weeks during Christmas break, Mr. Hutchings met me at the training room to use the newest ultrasound technology on my neck to try and give me some relief from the terrible pain. He was assistant coach at the time, but it was clear that he really and truly cared about the kids. Later I had him for Government class and came to appreciate him even more for his gentle way. Rest in Peace my friend.

  7. We knew Bruce from my days as principal’s secretary at SHS. Bruce was always one of the kindness men I have known. He was well liked by the students, faculty and staff at Speedway. Bruce will be greatly missed. Joyce and Chet Sparks

  8. Mr. Hutchings was the definition of a true gentleman who loved kids. His quite and gentle demeanor immediately calmed situations and students allowing learning to occur. He was a terrific Coach. Before being a Head Coach, Mr Hutchings served as an assistant to several big name Speedway Coaches contributing greatly to their success. To his credit, he never tried to steal the spotlight or subvert their authority, always being supportive. I will never forget his voice, his demeanor, his dry sense of humor, his love for kids and their well-being, and the lessons learned from his US Government class! God Speed Mr Hutchings!

  9. Emerson penned it best: “What you do speaks so loudly we can’t hear what you say.” Your deeds will be forever in our hearts. You will be missed dear friend. John and Carol

  10. This inpact this man had on me as a teacher stays with me decades later. You were one of a kind. May you rest in peace, sir. The world lost a wonderful man.

  11. Remembering the good years I had the privilege of knowing and working with Bruce at Speedway High School. A truly remarkable man. I treasured his friendship. Gay Brucker

  12. Mr. Hutchings always told us: Dont be average. Average was always so far beneath him. We are all blessed to carry his permanent impact on our lives.

  13. Papaw Hutch will forever be in our hearts. He was an amazing man who put others before himself.
