Mary Kathleen Jay
May 9, 1930 ~ February 1, 2017
Mary Kathleen Jay, 86, of Mooresville, Indiana, went peacefully to her Lord on February 1, 2017 after an eight-year battle with cancer.
Friends and family will gather to honor and celebrate the life of Kathleen on Sunday, February 5, 2017, 4 to 6 p.m., in the chapel at Carlisle - Branson Funeral Service & Crematory, Mooresville. The funeral service will begin at 2 p.m., Monday, February 6, 2017, at the funeral home. Burial will be in West Newton Cemetery.
Kathleen was born to Ralph and Minnie (Nelson) Anders on May 9, 1930, in Rheem’s Creek, North Carolina. She graduated from Van Buren High School. She married James Nelson Jay on December 23, 1951. Kathleen worked for Indiana National Bank for fourteen years, was active in Mooresville’s Likely Literary Club, the Republican Party, and was a member of Valley Mills Friends Meeting.
Kathleen now walks the kingdom of heaven with her husband Nelson, her son Jeffrey Jay (Brenda), and her daughter Jennifer (Jay) Funcheon, who preceded her in death.
Her deepest pride was for her family, and she especially loved having her children and grandchildren stop by for a cup of coffee and dessert. She was the biggest fan of her grandchildren’s extracurricular activities and attended just about every sporting event they participated in. Kathleen’s sense of humor and laughter were contagious, her faith unwavering, and her love touched all whose paths she crossed. Her selflessness was paramount, and her legacy will continue to thrive through all of her grandchildren, for whom she and Nelson gave the gift of college tuition.
Survivors include her “Three Amigos,” sons Gregory Jay (Jill) of Mooresville, James R. Jay (Marsha) of Plainfield and David Jay (Lisa) of Plainfield; sister Barbara Maggart (Don) of Wabash; thirteen grandchildren; and five great grandchildren; all of whom will miss her dearly.

I knew Kathleen at Valley Mills Friends. She was always positive and friendly PLUS she ALWAYS looked nice. She didn’t let her age get in the way. She was more active than some people half her age. And that smile!! WOW!! I don’t think she knew how to frown. I only knew her for a couple of years. Those in her family and friends who knew her longer were very fortunate.
What a joy to have known Kathleen. She made each person she met feel they were uniquely special, and that was intentional. She wanted you to feel special, no matter who you were. There were no strangers in Kathleen’s life.
Kathleen had the unique ability to make to whomever she spoke feel as if they were part of her inner circle. Always positive and down-to-earth, gracious, sincere and poised, she and my mom spent many special times together staying in touch with sweet friends over the years. You are missed, Kathleen, but I’m hoping you can start catching up with Nelson, Jeff & Jennifer.
Our thoughts are with the Jay Family. Hope the sharing of so many fond memories will bring peace and comfort to you all.
Although our friendship has not been long, Kathleen and I have had a wonderful, rich relationship. I shall miss her very much. Norma Thurman, Meadow Lakes.
The Jays parents were always positive and polite to me and my family. They made a influence on my life and I know they did the same for others.
They are missed by many.
My prayers and condolences go to family and friends as they are missed

Such fond memories of Kathleen from my first days at Valley Mills. She was always such an inspiration with her humor, kindness and gentle spirit. Nothing leaves a hole in your heart like the loss of a mother but my hope is that you find comfort in the many memories you share of her and the foundation she laid for her children and grandchildren and great-grands. Her legacy is this family, its values and its love. That legacy and those memories will keep her alive and with you forever. With love to you all, Sara Buchwald
She was one of my favorite patients….always smiling, always laughing!! Even when her cancer diagnosis was delivered, her major concern was for her beloved husband!!! Heaven is a better place with her presence
