Portia Samuels

portia samuels

August 1, 1944 ~ April 2, 2015

Portia (Dalton) Samuels was called home April 2, 2015, surrounded by her loved ones. She was born August 01, 1944, to the late Estle “Verne” and Mary (Fishel) Dalton. She lived most of her life in Brooklyn, Indiana, and passed away peacefully at her residence.

Portia is survived by her three children, Tim Samuels and Tammy Austin of Brooklyn, and Theresa Wilson of Monrovia. In addition, she leaves behind sons-in-law, Dan Wilson and David Austin; five grandchildren, Kendol, Nicholas, Brook, Tayler Jade, and Kaylee Rose; and eight great-grandchildren, Ryatt, Addison, Devin, Reis, Kionna, Emma, Kierstyn, and Eli. Those preceding her in death include her parents; two sisters, Connie (Dalton) Adams and Diana (Dalton) Casey of Martinsville; a brother, Richard Dalton of Bloomington.

Some may have known her through her many years of employment at Frisch’s in Plainfield, but those who knew her best will remember her mostly as a nurturer and caregiver. She loved her family deeply, fiercely, and without limits. Through the past two decades, cancer struck a number of her kin, including all three of her siblings. It was Portia, in many cases, who found it in herself to hold their hands and wipe their tears in the final months of their lives, reminding them to laugh, despite their circumstances. So, it’s with especially heavy hearts that we now say goodbye to our beloved caretaker. Yes, “The world keeps on turning,” dear Mother, Grandma, Aunt, and friend, but your absence will be felt forever.

Friends and family will gather on Saturday, April 4, 2015, 4 to 7 p.m. in the chapel at Carlisle – Branson Funeral Service & Crematory, Mooresville. A service to celebrate Portia’s life will begin at 7 p.m. Cremation will follow at the Morgan County Crematory, Mooresville. Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Morgan County.
