Rita Joan Dorsey, 75, of Indianapolis, passed away on March 20, 2026, at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.

Joan was born on May 24, 1950, in Waverly, Indiana, to the late Raymond and Marie (Vibbert) Gibbons. She graduated from Mooresville High School in 1969 and went on to earn her cosmetologist license. Joan dedicated more than 30 years to her work as a hairstylist, warmly welcoming clients into her home through her business, “Hairstyling by Jody.” She built not only a career, but lasting friendships with those she served.

In November of 1972, Joan married the love of her life, Larry Dorsey. Together they shared many wonderful years of marriage until his passing in 2017. She remained a devoted wife throughout their life together, cherishing the memories they created.

Joan was a woman of many talents and a heart full of generosity. She loved crafting, especially creating folk art and sewing. She found joy in cooking and took great pride in hosting family gatherings, where her meals brought everyone together. Her love for gardening and flowers reflected her nurturing spirit.

A devoted Christian, Joan faithfully read her Bible and lived her life guided by her strong faith. She was an exceptional homemaker and deeply committed to her family. She was a loving mother and grandmother who took great joy in raising her grandchildren, ensuring they were cared for at home with love.

Joan also enjoyed life’s simple pleasures, including watching westerns, nostalgic television shows, and soap operas. Known for her kindness and selflessness, she was always willing to lend a helping hand. Joan was truly a giver—someone who would do anything for anyone—and her compassion left a lasting impression on all who knew her.

Joan will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her family and friends. Her legacy of love, faith, and generosity will continue to live on in the hearts of those she touched.

Survivors include her sons, Grant Dorsey (Heather) and Brett Dorsey (Liza); grandchildren, Taylor, Katylyn, Brenton, Lillian, and Alan Dorsey; and sister, Needa Gilvin.

In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Larry Dorsey; and brothers, Robin and Ricky Gibbons.

A private graveside service will be held, and Joan will be laid to rest next to Larry in Bethel Cemetery in Indianapolis.
