Barbara Jean Meece

February 14, 1939 ~ October 20, 2026

Born in: Dayton, Ohio
Resided in: Unionville, Indiana

Barbara Jean Meece, age 87, passed away peacefully on October 20, 2026. She was born on February 14, 1939, in Dayton, Ohio, to the late Robert and Artie (Kempton) Hickman.

At just 15 years old, Barbara married the love of her life, James Leon Meece, Sr., on March 18, 1954. Together they built a life rooted in deep devotion until his passing on October 10, 2014. A woman of strong faith, Barbara was a longtime member of the Mt. Eden Baptist Church in Russell Springs, Kentucky.

Though small in stature, Barbara was absolutely mighty. Her family fondly remembers her as a feisty firecracker—the ultimate embodiment of “the little engine that could.” She possessed a wonderful sense of humor, a deeply loving nature, and a fierce, unwavering devotion to her family. Barbara found joy in the simple pleasures of life: tending to her garden, reading voraciously, caring for animals (especially her beloved cats), and surrounding herself with her favorite color, purple.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James; her daughter, Candy Lynn Lawrimore; and two cherished grandchildren, Loni and Michaela.

Her legacy of love lives on through her surviving children: Cindy Beth (George) Neal, Carmen (Ken) Hawes, James L. (Melissa) Meece, Jr., and Dan (Vicki) Meece. She is also survived by her ten grandchildren: Angela, Jackie, Chris, Melanie, Amanda, Lacinda, Tyler, Grace, Natalie, and Joshua; as well as many great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Family and friends are invited to gather for a visitation on Saturday, October 24, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Carlisle – Branson Funeral Service & Crematory in Mooresville, Indiana. A funeral service celebrating her life will follow immediately at 3:00 p.m.

Barbara will be laid to rest next to her beloved James “Leon” in the White Lick Cemetery. Those wishing to share a favorite memory or sign the online guest registry may do so by visiting the Carlisle-Branson Guest Registry.

  1. Barbara was such a precious lady. I haven’t seen her in several years, but the last time I saw her, she was so welcoming and insisted my husband and I spend the night in her home. She cooked us a big dinner and then turned right around and cooked us a big breakfast and it was delicious. She had a love of antiques, which she proudly showed us room to room throughout her home. It was a wonderful visit and I could tell she truly enjoyed having us there and we loved being in her company. I know she is eternally rejoicing in heaven. She walked through this world, lovingly and loved. She is home. Rest in peace, cousin Barbara.
