Brenda May (Swinney) McWhirter

Brenda May (Swinney) McWhirter, 73, a longtime Mooresville resident, passed away peacefully at home November 22, 2024. Brenda was born on November 14, 1951, in Indianapolis, to the late Harold E. and Edith Mae (Cooper) Swinney. She married John W. McWhirter on March 26, 1976, and he survives.

Brenda graduated from Mooresville High School in 1970 and attended Ball State University. She worked as a claim processor for Blue Cross/Blue Shield and was most proud of her employment in the monogram department for Red Cats USA. An accomplished seamstress and avid quilter, Brenda was a member of various quilting groups including Quilts of Valor. She was a lifelong member of the Mooresville Christian Church, and her family was instrumental in the construction of the “new” church across from the high school. Brenda was also active in scouts and served as a den mother. She exercised her green thumb every spring and loved caring for her gardens. If you were part of the family, you knew where to be on the Fourth of July, never missing an opportunity to be a part of Brenda & John’s annual party. She will be fondly remembered for her kindness, thoughtfulness, and generosity.

In addition to her parents, Brenda was preceded in death by her brother, Dale Swinney and sisters, Lynn Chambers and Gwynn (Jim) Wilkins; special sister, Saundra Smith; step-mother, Virginia Swinney; step-sister, Lois Pickett; brother-in-law, Terry Foust.

Survivors include her husband of 48 years John; son, Josh (Autumn) McWhirter; daughter, Rebecca (David) Couch; twin sister, Barbara Foust; two grandchildren, Gabrielle and Ethan McWhirter; step-sister, Margaret (Jim) Lucas; brother-in-law, Bill Smith.

Brenda’s Life Celebration® Visitation will be held Tuesday, November 26, 2024, 4 to 7 p.m., at the First Christian Church, 550 N. Indiana Street, Mooresville. The funeral service will begin at 11 a.m., Wednesday, November 27, 2024, at the church. Burial will be in White Lick Cemetery. Carlisle – Branson Funeral Service & Crematory is serving the family. Guestbook

  1. My condolences to Brenda’s family. You will be in my thoughts and prayers. I had great times bowling with Brenda, and sewing together for FHA. A few years after high school our paths crossed again at Blue Cross Blue Shield.

  2. Always so loving and sweet. Like an angel as a child, just like her sisters and brother. I lived in the house next door. Between my Grandparents (Cooper) and the Swinney house. Always running in and out of their house. There were always lots of kids there. The Swinney cousins and the Cooper cousins. Wonderful life growing up in a big happy family. I’ll see you on the other side. Give Cristi Remster Lewis a kiss and hug from me. Love you, Brenda
