Born in: Kirksville, Missouri
Resided in: Mooresville, Indiana

Evangelist Terry J. Crist, 77, beloved minister and longtime Mooresville resident, was welcomed Home to Jesus on April 13, 2025.  Terry was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumor just a month ago and died peacefully at home, where he was surrounded by hymns of praise and the deep love of his family.  Terry was born May 21, 1947, in Kirksville, Missouri, to the late Russell Paul and Willadeane (Bunch) Crist.  Terry married the love of his life, Karen (Runner) Crist on December 30, 1966, and she survives.

Terry graduated from Liberty High School (R-1) in 1965 and continued his education at Midwest School of Evangelism (M.S.E.), completing five years of school in three.  Knowing of his strong desire to be a pastor, Terry went straight into the ministry out of high school.  He served in Ridgeway, Missouri, Goodhue, Minnesota, and came to Mt. Gilead Church, Mooresville, in 1972.  He also served for nine years in Pittsburgh at Monroeville and North Hills Christian Churches.  While at Mt. Gilead, Terry served as the senior minister for 16 years and as pastoral minister for 24 years.  To say that Terry was a fixture at Mt. Gilead and in Mooresville is a gross understatement.  He was deeply devoted to serving others in the Lord.  He loved the church and was most proud that Mt. Gilead continues to grow.

Terry was a member and past president of the Mooresville Kiwanis Club and also served as Lieutenant Governor.  He was the Boy Scout Institutional Representative for 20 years.  Terry never missed an opportunity to visit his beloved homeplace in Missouri, play a round of golf, or enjoy a wonderful meal with family and friends.  Terry always wanted to write a book, and while that did not happen, he was most proud that his daughter Jennifer is preparing to accomplish this task.  A true evangelist, Terry became affiliated with Ambassadors for Christ in the Philippines in 1984 and had served as their president since 2002.  Terry’s strong devotion to the organization led him to visit the Philippines every other year.  Terry was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather who simply delighted in seeing his family grow through the years.

In addition to his parents, Terry was preceded in death by his two brothers, Manford and John Crist.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 58 years, Karen; children, Julie (Steve) Gregory, Jodi White, Tim Crist, and Jennifer (Johnny) Scott; brothers, sister, Deborah (Mike) York; sister-in-law, Mary Crist; grandchildren, Cordon (Sarah) Gregory, Laurel (Austin) Jones, Elise (Cooper) Mills, Grace White and Jadon (Brianna) White; Isaac and Benjamin Crist; Riley (Mallory) Scott, Aiden (Eva) Scott, Finnley, Marielle, and Marianno Scott; great-grandchildren, Emmett, Hattie, Loretta, Layna, Mila, Rain, and Stevie.

Terry’s Life Celebration® Visitation and Funeral Service will be held at Mt. Gilead Church, 6019 E. State Road 144, Mooresville.  Visitation will be Tuesday, April 22, 2025, 4 to 8 p.m., and from 10 to 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 23, 2025.  The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 23, 2025.  Burial will be in the Mooresville Cemetery.  While flowers are appreciated, please consider making a memorial contribution to Mt. Gilead Church; envelopes will be available at the services.  Carlisle – Branson Funeral Service & Crematory, Mooresville, is serving the family.  Visit www.CarlisleBranson.com to share a favorite memory or to sign the online guest registry.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. My condolences to all the family! Terry was a great man, a heart for Jesus and a passion for others. His influence and light to the community will continue to shine. He will be missed! He was always so kind and a welcoming friend to us all.

  2. I don’t think I have ever seen Terry without a smile on his face and joy in his heart. Having my mother pass of the same thing in 3 short weeks, I pray for the family and feel your pain. God bless. 🙏🏼

  3. Terry was a very special person! He baptized me when I was pregnant with our daughter and then baptized her 12 years later on her birthday, April 13th. Terry always had a godly presence about him and we are forever thankful God put him in our lives. May he rest in peace with our dear Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

  4. I never knew anyone more in tune or closer to Jesus than Terry. He was wonderful. My heart goes out to all the Crist family. Terry baptized me back when I was goofy teenager at 17. Every time I saw him, he acted like I was his best friend. Terry loved everyone he had the pleasure to meet and/or know. He will be sorely missed by everyone whose heart was touched by him. I am a far better man to have known Terry.

  5. Terry was a gentle, giant who loved his Savior and loved his neighbor as himself. Well deserved good and faithful. Rest in the living arms of your Savior. He was always a light for God.

  6. Every time I saw Terry, he always had a smile on his face and a kind word. He was a wonderful man and will be missed around Mooresville.

  7. He made a tremendous impact in my walk as a new Christian and all my days at Mt. Gilead and loved his heart for the Lord. He will be truly missed indeed.

  8. Terry was a true man of God. He was was such a great encourager to me when I started in ministry and I knew I could go to him for good, sound, Godly advice. Rest well in the arms of Jesus my friend. You’ve earned it.

  9. Terry had a genuine love for everyone he crossed paths with, and it showed in the way he listened, shared stories, and offered encouragement. I have such fond memories of our family reunions in Winigan, where his laughter, his kindness, and his way with words brought both wisdom and humor into the room. He always had a smile on his face, and that spirit will be remembered by all of us who were fortunate to know him.

  10. My first memory of being welcomed to Mt. Gilead Church. My prayers are with his family.

  11. Terry was a very nice man I had known him for many years He always had a smile on his face and something to say to you I loved his friendship so sorry for the family we will all certainly miss him Sending Prayers

  15. Karen, Steve & Julie, Jodi, Tim and Jennifer:

I am so sorry to learn of Terry’s passing. He was one of the finest men I have ever known and some of the best and most memorable conversations in my life were with him. I will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

  19. Thankful to have known Terry! Favorite memory was watching him “man the grill” at National Youth Roundup (NYR) I believe back around 2004. His joy and sense of peace you received around him will live on. He will be remembered every time the grill needs a little more “BAM” to it! Praying for your family!

  20. So very sorry for your loss! Terry was an incredible witness for Our Lord. He not only preached his words but lived by them. He touched my heart in so many ways. He was my childhood Minister, a teacher, a friend and such a good listner. Praying for your family and the comunity as we remember him.

  21. Along with my parents, Terry was the person who most influenced me to accept God’s call to ministry. I was 14 when he came to Mt. Gilead and entered my life for the first time, and I was 22 when he entered it a second time when I came back home from serving in the Marines. Both times were instrumental in setting my course in ministry. He was the last surviving signer of my ordination certificate.

  22. He will be missed by a grateful community. He was always smiling and never met a stranger. Rest in Peace

  23. I did not get to meet Jodis Father, but getting to know her at small group, I know that she has come from such a wonderful family heritage, and her father was such a very important part of that… Even though we know that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord, I offer heartfelt condolences, because we grieve, and miss that irreplaceable person in their presence in our lives. I’m thanking God to touch the whole family.
    Sincerely Jacqueline ✝️

  24. I’ll miss you for awhile till we meet again. I know you and Dad are greeting each other with hugs, laughter, and probably a joke or two. Be sure to look for Mom …. her earthly hugs were heavenly!
