Born in: Indianapolis, Indiana
Resided in: Mooresville, Indiana

George Hommel III, 72, of Mooresville, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 27, 2026, at his home. Born on June 1, 1953, in Indianapolis, Indiana, Herc, as many lovingly knew him, spent his life dedicating his time and talents to his family and his work.

Herc graduated from Decatur Central High School with the class of 1971. As a construction superintendent, Herc was known for his unwavering work ethic and exceptional skills. Throughout his career, he was often called in to bring projects back on track, a testament to his adept leadership and expertise. His craftsmanship as a carpenter set him apart, earning the respect of colleagues and clients alike. He retired from Patterson Horth of Indianapolis. One of the jobs he was most proud of was his work at Union Station in Indianapolis.

Beyond his professional life, Herc embraced the joys of family and hobbies. He cherished his role as a husband to Lemmie (Catellier) Hommel. The two were united in marriage on April 8, 1972.
Herc found immense pleasure in watching his grandchildren participate in their various sporting events, always cheering them on with pride and enthusiasm. He was also a lover of the outdoors, finding solace in gardening and the simple joys it brought.

An avid fan of classic westerns, Herc enjoyed watching movies and tv shows featuring icons like John Wayne and Chuck Connors. He possessed a spirit of adventure that took him on countless car rides with Lemmie, often on the hunt for the perfect restaurant for dinner-a journey that became a cherished tradition for the couple. He also enjoyed riding and breaking horses.

He will be deeply missed by many including his wife, Lemmie Hommel of Mooresville; son, Jason (wife, Melinda) Hommel of Avon; daughter, Shannon (husband, Brian) Chambers of Camby; former son-in-law, George (wife, Alma) Samuels of Greenwood; grandchildren, Levi Samuels, Alex Hommel, Dylan Hommel, Noah Summers, and Brady Chambers; and great grandchild, Koraline Samuels.

He was preceded in death by his father, George Hommel Jr.

Guestbook

  1. Lemmie and family I’m so sorry. Continue thought’s and prayers for all. He was a great man.

    • What can I say about my cousin? Always kind, always there, willing to do whatever was needed to help anyone. Hurk was the embodiment of generosity and compassion, never hesitating to lend a hand or offer a word of encouragement when it was needed most. His warmth and selflessness touched so many lives, leaving a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
I will love and miss you, Hurk. Your presence brought comfort and joy, and your absence leaves an ache in our hearts. Still, I find solace in the thought that we shall see each other again on the other side. Rest in peace, Hurk. Your memory will live on in all of us.

  2. We’ll always remember Herc for his humor, kindness, and the joy he brought to everyone around him. His laughter and warmth will be deeply missed. Sending the family thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. I love you Herc and Lem.

  3. Lemmie,
I enjoyed the pictures. You all made such a beautiful family. Joe and I are so sorry for your loss.

  4. We have been George’s neighbor for many years. When the grandkids would come over, George would always take them for a ride on his side by side to go see the cows and it just made their day! When they got old enough they would find their little binoculars to look out the back window and ask, “whats Geourge doin” it was so cute to see them so excited to see their neighbor. George will be greatly missed our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

  5. Lemme and family I am so sorry for you all. I only just found his arrangements so I did not get to come pay my respects to him. Herc was one of a kind and I know will be truly missed by many. He was always one of my favorite people. Always had a smile and a kiss for me.
    Sending love and prayers

  6. I’m so upset that I missed the services. Thanks for sharing the family slideshow, he would be proud. George was a friend for around 30 years. He could always make me laugh and smile. We met at Shiel Sexton, then worked together again at Duke Realty. We never lost contact for long, and when we’d talk or see each other it was as if time hadn’t passed. He always had a funny story, a smile and a hug to share. He was my buddy. Sending love and prayers to all of you as you grieve such an enormous loss.
