George R. Schmidt, 76, of Indianapolis, passed away on the morning of April 11th. His funeral will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, April 22nd at Carlisle – Branson Funeral Service & Crematory in Mooresville with burial to follow in Clayton Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, April 21st from 4:00 PM with a Masonic service beginning at 7:00 PM.
George grew up in Mooresville surrounded by brothers, sisters, and cousins. He graduated from Mooresville High School wanting to be an architect. First however, he joined the Army and went to Vietnam where he earned an Army Commendation Medal for Heroism under fire and a Purple Heart, among others.
Upon his return from Vietnam, George started a family and became a semi truck driver. Eventually, he moved into the Teamsters union and retired as a Union Representative for Teamsters Local 135 of central Indiana.
A friend to everyone he met, George was active in many fraternal and veterans’ organizations. These included the Freemasons, both Scottish Rite and Shriner (Mooresville Lodge 78), the Fraternal Order of Eagles (Plainfield Lodge), Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the American Legion (Post 64).
George has been reunited with his parents, George and Vera, and his siblings Bob, Shirley Moffett, Stephen, and Rodney, who preceded him in death. He will be missed by many including his son George (Paula); his grand-daughters Isabella, Leanne, Jessica, and Katherine; his siblings Richard, Connie Lafary, Glenn, Don, Paula Basey, and Bryan; his best friend Mike Hubrect; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
