Gregory W. Kempf

Gregory W. Kempf, 65, of Avon, Indiana, passed away peacefully at home on October 18, 2023, after a 3-year battle with pancreatic cancer. Greg was born November 6, 1957, in Wooster, Ohio, to the late Nicholas and June (Greiner) Kempf. Greg married Lynn (Hinshaw) Kempf on March 20, 1982. He graduated from Columbus Bishop Ready High School in 1975 and from Ohio State University in 1980. Greg later earned a Master’s degree from Purdue University in 1992.

Armed with a talented and bright mind for engineering, Greg was a design engineer for the Allison Division of General Motors for 39 years, retiring in 2020. Greg was passionate about our environment and devoted much time to those efforts through Citizens Climate Lobby (CCL), Carbon Neutral Indiana (CNI), and the Elders Climate Action. He had planted over three hundred trees and loved to distribute seedlings and trees to those who enjoyed them too. Greg was also passionate for bicycling. He was a longtime and devoted member of the Central Indiana Biking Association (CIBA).

His third passion was for his family, for which he loved immensely. His two grandchildren, Poppy and Rowan, were the impetus for their recent move to New Hampshire. Greg will be fondly remembered by his loving family and many friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Katherine Kempf. Survivors include his loving wife, Lynn; daughter, Erica (David Broughton) Kempf; brothers, Steven Kempf and Paul (Diane) Kempf; two grandchildren, Poppy and Rowan Broughton.

A Life Celebration® Memorial Visitation will be held Friday, November 10, 2023, 4 to 7 p.m. at the Carlisle – Branson Funeral Service & Crematory, 39 E. High Street, Mooresville. An informal memorial service, with an opportunity to share memories, will begin at 11 a.m., Saturday, November 11, 2023, at the funeral home. 1. We are so sorry that Greg has passed away but we are glad that we were able to see him again once more. Our love and thoughts are with you all. He will be fondly remembered by us both. June & Keith xx

  2. Greg was such a wonderful man. During our soccer days he was always there to help coach and encourage all the kids. His smile and positive attitude was contagious. All of Greg’s strengths and smile will carry on through Erica, Rowan and Poppy. May God bless and keep all of your family in his arms during this time.

  3. Thinking of you during this difficult time.
May the happy memories of good times together comfort you.

    Your Aunt,
    Theresa

  4. I understand the difficult time in losing a loved one after a long illness.

    My deepest sympathy,

    Uncle Paul Hinshaw

  5. Lynn, Erica, and all the Kempf family,
If there is anything I can do, please let me know. I am unable to attend.

  6. Greg worked with us as a team with Elders Climate Action, Heartland Chapter. His dedication to fighting Climate Change was seen in all he did with our group. Although he and I worked together only briefly, I saw his passion for the environment both in his hard work at tree planting at home and in his political advocacy in our newsletter that he co-edited with me. Greg will be missed by so many. I am sorry for your loss.

  7. Lynn, Erica and Family,
Thinking of you today with Love and deepest sympathies. May peace and comfort find you during this difficult time.

    Love,
    The Baders
    Bridget, Sean, Kennedy and Sophia

  8. To the family of Greg Kempf,

Though words are inadequate, I wanted to express my deepest sadness and sympathy regarding Greg’s passing. I knew Greg as a fellow member of the Indianapolis chapter of Citizens’ Climate Lobby. My takeaway of Greg from this limited relationship was that he was passionate about fighting climate change, articulate, very knowledgeable concerning the science of climate change, very positive, and an all-around great guy. It was a very sad day when he announced his cancer diagnosis to our chapter members. He was determined to make the world a better place and, I think, he succeeded. He certainly contributed so positively to our CCL chapter and made us all better through his presence and participation.

  9. I didnt have a father in my life and Greg was a great influence on me . I looked up to him alot and i cant imagine how i would have turned out without a great man to look up to as he was.hr gave me my first car and got me into a life long addiction of ball card collecting. I will miss his smole and his wilingness to be there for anyone in need. RIP Greg

  10. Greg, a devoted family man and adept automatic and hybrid transmission engineer, it was my privilege that he served as my esteemed mentor and friend. The 6-speed HD and 10-speed HD automatic transmissions he contributed to were widely acknowledged as among the finest in the industry. I warmly recall our shared moments, like doing morning push-ups at work in Indy. You will be missed! Rest in peace, Greg.
