Henry J. "Hank" Wolff

Henry J. “Hank” Wolff, 90, of Monrovia, passed away Monday, April 3, 2017. He was born August 27, 1926, to Henry J., Sr., and Marie (Kohlmann) Wolff. He graduated from Arsenal Technical High School in 1944. At seventeen, he enlisted in the United States Navy and became a crewmember of the PBY “Black Cat” squadron, fighting in the Pacific during World War II. Seeing the World War II memorial last year on an Honor Flight, Hank said it ranked “as one of the greatest days of my life.”

He married Ida M. Schnelle on October 11, 1947. They celebrated 60 years of marriage before her passing in 2007. Hank and Ida became members of Little Flower parish and were a part of the initial parish fund raising efforts that resulted in the church that stands today. He was a successful CYO football coach, bringing several of his teams to city championships. He was presented the St. John Bosco Award for service to Catholic youth.

In February, 1953, he began a twenty-year career with the Indianapolis Police Department. From patrolman to major, he loved being a “cop.” And he was good at his job. His men loved and respected him, knowing that he always had their back. He was an active member of the Fraternal Order of Police, and held lifetime memberships with the American Legion and PBY Association. As a young officer, he was chosen to be on then-Senator John F. Kennedy’s security detail while traveling the state. In 1964, he escorted the Beatles to their concert at the State Fairgrounds and took them out for a few beers afterward. He loved telling stories and had plenty of them to share.

In 1974, he began a new career as the Manager of Security for St. Vincent Hospital. After nineteen years, he took a second and more permanent retirement. He now spent his time with Ida, their family, and their friends at their home in Monrovia. They attended St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Mooresville, and Hank was a charter member of the newly established Knights of Columbus Council.

Hank moved into Traditions at Reagan Park in 2014. The family would like to thank the staff for their incredible kindness and remarkable care of their father (and Penny) during this time. No one could ask or hope that their parent would be treated any better.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved Ida, and oldest son, Michael P. Wolff. Surviving children include two sons, Joseph S. (Flora), of Midway City, Califonia and John F. (Angie) Wolff of Danville; two daughters, Katherine A. (Glenn) Parker, of Oceanside, California and Christine (Dudley) Taylor, Indianapolis; sister, Ingebor (Ruben) Hoskins, Greenwood; nine grandchildren, Kaitlin Brodnik, Mary Ann Wolff, Leah Parker, Natalie Courtwright, Carla Taylor, Christopher Taylor, Emily Wolff, Matthew Wolff, Rachel Wolff; and his great granddaughter, Kayden Jedwabny.

Family and friends will gather to celebrate the life of Henry Wolff from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Friday, April 7, 2017, in the chapel at Carlisle-Branson Funeral Service & Crematory in Mooresville. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 8, 2017, at Little Flower Catholic Church. Entombment will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Indianapolis. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Little Flower Catholic Church or Indy Honor Flight. Visit www.carlislebranson.com.

  1. On behalf of the Société de Police – IPD Adam & Edward, our condolences to the family and friends of Henry J. “Hank” Wolff, 90, of Monrovia, who passed from this life on Monday, 3 Apr.

Without a doubt one of the best of commanders I was able to have as a shift commander, Major Wolff was highly regarded by all of his shift personnel for his leadership abilities and interactions for his personnel. I’ve always been truly honored to have served within his command! He remains a leader – #neverforgottenhere!

To the family, we offer the following thought on Hank’s new journey from his earthly life, for it was written just for such a moment: It is the will of God and Nature that these mortal bodies be laid aside, when the soul is to enter into real life; ’tis rather an embrio state, a preparation for living; a man is not completely born until he be dead. ~ Benjamin Franklin

For Hank we pray: Eternal Rest grant unto Henry J. Wolff Jr., Oh Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. And may the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

  2. HANK WAS A “COPS” COP, A GREAT MAN AND FRIEND.
WE WILL BE OUT OF TOWN, BUT WANTED THE FAMILY TO KNOW WE ARE THINKING ABOUT YOU AND TO LET YOU KNOW WHAT A GREAT GUY HE WAS.
    TOM & JAN COTTON

  3. Your family was a great family to have in the neighborhood! I was friends with John when you lived on 17th and Bosart. I had good times at your place, your mother and father always made me feel welcome. My family will pray for your family, i know that Mrs. Wolff is happy to b e reunited with her love. And from what i remember about your dad- Heaven just got a little richer!

    Sincerely

  4. Hank and Ida were very special to us here at Nancy’s in Monrovia. We loved hearing Hanks stories…as him and Bradley were in the same circles back in the day. Hank and Ida were good people! Deepest sympathy to the family.

  5. What a life, I loved coming to his house and hearing about his experiences. His was a life well lived!

  6. I remember Hank as a fine coach of our 6th grade football team that won the city championship back in 1958…also, only person I ever saw that could drop-kick a football (with accuracy) over 50 yards. More importantly he was a great person. Back in the late 60’s while I was a college student he went to court with me and told the judge what a fine young man I was which helped “my troubles disappear”…also, because of Hank my folks never found out about the situation…I am sure they are having a good laugh about it right now.
When David O’ Connor, a former player of his and good friend of mine, was killed in Vietnam (1968) Hank joined several of us for few beers at the Merry-Go-Round Bar…his stories had us rolling with laughter…what a fine person he was.
Condolences to the family…in addition to all of you, Hank touched many lives for the better.
    John Tepe, Cincinnati, OH

  7. Mr. Wolff was so caring and giving. He always made sure that he took the “Mahoney Girls” to the father daughter breakfast at Little Flower. He will always be remembered in out thoughts and prayers.

    Kathy

  8. This is a beautiful and noble tribute to my dad. He loved being a “cop.” Thank you, Chris (Wolff) Taylor.daughter.

  9. Wolff Family,
I worked with Hank at St. Vincent Hospital. He was a wonderful, ethical, fun, and compassionate person who will certainly be missed by so many. May your fondest memories give you the strength to cope with the loss of this hero. Fondly, Ann ( Habig ) Sawyer
