Herman D. Atwood

Herman D. Atwood, 74, Monrovia, passed away February 28, 2023.  Herman was born April 13, 1948, in Plainfield, to the late Roscoe and Frances (Lynn) Atwood.  He married Linda Sue (Hayes) Atwood on July 12, 1969, and she survives.  

Herman attended Mooresville High School and graduated from Monrovia High School in 1967.  He worked at Glovers in Mooresville, J & L Steel (later Edgcomb Metals) and later worked in security at the former Wishard Hospital and IU Hospital.  Herman was a longtime and faithful member of Monrovia Christian Church and the Monrovia Masonic Lodge #654.  Herman always looked forward to his annual fishing trips to Port Clinton with his friends.  He was extremely active with Special Olympics being named Coach of the Year and ranking 13th at the national level among coaches.  Herman greatly enjoyed being an integral part of this special time with his sons and their many friends.  He was also a collector and enjoyed attending auctions and flea markets.  He was known for his love of children and continually adopted them as the "grandchildren he never had".  Above all, Herman had a huge heart and was an incredibly selfless person - always putting the needs of others before his own.  Herman’s memory will be forever cherished by his loving family and many friends. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Herman Dean Atwood; his brothers, Harold and Curtis Atwood; sister, Hazel Meyer. 

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Linda Sue Atwood; son, Brian Atwood; brother, Eugene (Shirley) Atwood; a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Herman’s Life Celebration® Visitation will be Thursday, March 2, 2023, 4 to 7 p.m., at the Carlisle – Branson Funeral Service & Crematory, Mooresville.  The Masonic Memorial will begin at 7 p.m., Thursday.  The funeral service will begin at 11 a.m., Friday, March 3, 2023, in the Monrovia Christian Church.  Burial will follow in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Hall.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Monrovia Christian Church.  Visit

    Herman was a wonderful man that I was blessed to work with at the Lilly Clinic for many years. I am out of town and regret that I won’t be able to attend his service. Please know that you will be in my heart and prayers for comfort and peace.

  6. Upon moving from Henry County to Indianapolis in 2004 to access more “unified sports” for my son, Sean; we were blessed to meet Coach Herman and his family. I thank GOD for his dedication to Special Olympics and the wonderful nurturing spirit he had with “our kids” !! Family, you will be in our prayers !!

  7. Reggie and Sissy cobbs is leaving condolence to the family and friends of this wonderful soul that has gone to be with the Lord. He was a wonderful coach and also a dear friend of our family . We like to say we love you and always have our dear friend may you rest in the lor it and I know that you are at peace. We won’t be there to celebrate your life but we are standing in prayer for family and friends no that we’ve lost great leader and a great friend from the Cobb’s family.

  8. I had the privilege of working with Herman while at the Lilly Clinic. He always took great care and pride in his role, he was always a respected team member. We also got to know Herman’s family through coaching Special Olympics basketball. He was a great coach and mentor for his athletes. He cared very deeply for his family and friends. A wonderful man and friend that will be missed by many. Sending comfort and peace to his family. Fly high with the angels Herman!

  9. We had the pleasure of having Herman as a friend. His heart was as big as his personality. Herman leaves so many family and friends much better for his innumerable kind actions. Special Olympics was where we most interacted with Herman. The program is special for many reasons, one of which is that it has been blessed by Herman’s touch. He will be missed.

  10. Worked with Herman at the Lilly Clinic. Always admired his stories of his sons and the Special Olympics. So caring and giving of himself to help others. Rest in peace Herman.

  13. I met Herman many years ago at the Lilly Clinic and always enjoyed hearing his perspective on life! We communicated through facebook over the past few years. I’m sorry for your loss and hope that you are comforted by his memory.

  14. I remember Herman from my time at the Lilly Clinic. He was always cheerful and kindhearted. He treated everyone the same. I remember when I would bring my father with me when I made rounds on the weekend. The two of them never ran out of things to talk about. Rest in peace.
