Michael Wayne Johnson

October 24, 1954 ~ August 30, 2021
Michael Wayne Johnson, 66, of Mooresville, passed away suddenly at home on August 30, 2021. Mike was born in Indianapolis on October 24, 1954 to the late Charles Erik Johnson and Sharlene Joan (Lucas) Herbertz. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Cindy Johnson, daughters, Kimberly Curtis and Christen (Ethan) Hanson, siblings, Chuck (Judy) Johnson and Sheryl (Mike) McKeand, step brothers, Dean (Lora) Herbertz and Darryl Herbertz, sister-in-law Cathy (Gordon) Ryan, mother-in-law, Carol Rossman; step-mother-in-law, Patty Schelm 3 grandchildren, and former wife Paula Jackson. He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Fred Schelm and step-father-in-law, David Rossman.
After graduating from Southport HS in 1973, Mike proudly served in the United States Navy as an air traffic controller during the Vietnam War from 1974 to 1976. He then worked for the Federal Aviation Administration until 1981 and retired from AT&T as Area Sales Manager, Yellow Page Division. In 2010 to present he was employed by Clean Air Concepts, Magnegrip Division, in Cincinnati, OH as VP of Sales.
Mike was a very social person who had a passion for water and boats. He and Cindy were married at Lake Monroe on her parents’ boat on September 14, 1986. They spent many years on weekends boating at Dale Hollow Lake in Tennessee, where they met lifelong friends. He loved helping his friends pilot their boats on several trips including the Tombigbee Waterway, the Great Lakes, East Coast and the Florida Keys. He also loved just spending time at the lake with family and friends. He had a big heart and would always lend a helping hand when he could. He had a knack for being able to fix anything and enjoyed tinkering in the garage. He was quick witted, easy going, fun to be around, but could also be stubborn. Mike will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Mike’s Celebration of Life will be held at Camby Community Church, 8604 Camby Rd, Camby, IN 46113. Visitation will be Thursday, October 14, 2021 at 10am with a Memorial Service following at 12 noon. Cindy and family, Joyce and I were so sad to hear about Mike. He will be greatly missed. We do feel blessed to have known him and we cherish the memories of all the great times we had boating. We remember the first time we met you and Mike on Dale Hollow Lake (1987 I think). We enjoyed many weekends together. Mike was a great help when we cruised from Lake Michigan down the rivers to Florida. I will never forget coming into Mobil, AL around 9:30 PM. There were workers welding on ships and barges, barges being moved all over Mobil Bay. My radar looked like it had the measles. I was having a difficult time finding the navigation buoys. Luckily with Mike’s good eyesight and experience as an Air Traffic Controller we navigated safely to the marina. We pray for God to comfort you during this difficult time. Love, Randy & Joyce
I grew up with Mr Johnson next door. I am so sad to hear of his passing. He was very friend and always had smile on his face when us kids were around.
I only knew Mike for a brief time, but I have always remembered how he helped me with a few fixes in my garage when I moved into my new home. He was fun to be around, and such kind person. I’m so sorry to hear of his passing. Sending prayers for Cindy and family.
We are so sorry to hear of Mikes passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
I met Mike years ago at Lake Monroe when I would go with my brother, who had a boat there . It was a fun time and Mike sure had his share. I would see him other places through the years and he would always seek me out and we would have a laugh and nice chat. He was a great guy and always had a welcoming smile.
