Ricky Lee Harris

September 11, 1959 ~ October 17, 2024
Ricky Lee Harris, 65, Greenwood, passed away peacefully, October 17, 2024, at his home. Mr. Harris was born September 11, 1959, in Indianapolis, to the late Uhlan Webster Harris and Jewel Gwendolyn (Inscoe) Yaryan, who survives. He married the love of his life, Nancy (McVey) Harris on May 31, 1986, and she survives.
Rick graduated from Beech Grove High School in 1978 and began a long and successful career with the Indiana Department of Transportation in 1979. Rick was employed as a project manager and scientist for 45 years and was looking forward to his well-deserved retirement that was scheduled for September of 2026. His attention to detail and the standards by which Rick operated were valuable assets, making him a highly valued and respected employee.
Rick was an avid bowler who had even bowled the perfect 300 in his career. He also coached bowling during the Peace Games. Rick loved the outdoors and created many great memories camping and fishing. He was a loyal and devoted family man who simply loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. Rick was a proud supporter of Donald Trump. While he could be a bit hard and abrasive on the exterior, his family described him as a big marshmallow on the inside. His loving family and many friends will forever cherish Rick’s memory.
Survivors include his loving wife of 38 years, Nancy; mother, Jewel Yaryan (James); son, Ricky Lee (Brenda Garner) Harris II; daughter, Amanda Marie Harris; brother, Bill Harris; sisters, Julie Williams, Debbie Harris, and Susan (the late Gary) Davis; grandchildren, Daniel Keithly and Samuel Harris; his loyal dog, Pepper.

It was a pleasure to know Rick. He was a well respected co-worker. I will remember the little things, like him taking all the pears from my pear tree and making pear sauce. Or helping me with my broken fridge by getting his son to 3D print a new part. Or at the end of the day, “See ya boys”.
It was an honor to be his nurse for those few days that I was able to assist. Hugs and prayers to everyone in the family!
Enjoyed working with Rick for these past 10 years. He was very knowledgeable and was of a great help. Great guy and a good friend.
I’ve known Rick for almost 40 years and we became partners in multiple ways. We worked together in the lab and outside of it with private security companies. We played some softball together, bowled together and he welcomed me and my family into his home, born the same year and being a husband and a father on similar tracks. I knew much about his family and he of mine. Rick became known for being the hardest worker in all of the testing labs, and was qualified to run about half of them. Working for him in the concrete lab was great because he was very disciplined and all was orderly but we also had some laughs and he acknowledged good work, but liked to tease. M&T was lucky to have him. He was a rock, very dependable. I was at times amazed at his abilities like when we worked at the guard shack where trucks were coming in and out with different materials and Rick was on top of all of it and had a great repore with all of the truckers. He was a good provider and I am sure Nancy, Amanda, Ricky and the grandkids, that you miss him already. My heartfelt prayers are with you all. 🙏
I worked with Rick at INDOT sometimes he acted hard on me, but he taught so much I will miss him so much
It was a pleasure to get to work with and know Rick last 10 years. He would comeback and sit down and him and I would joke back-and-forth talk about work and have a good time. I will miss all those conversations and the fun that we had together. He was a great colleague and I will miss working with him.
