Lois Curry

Lois Justis Curry, 91, longtime Mooresville resident, passed away January 16, 2021. Lois was born January 25, 1929, in Bloomington, to the late Wilson Raymond and Wilma Inez (Benson) Justis.

She graduated from Ellettsville High School. Lois married William R. Curry and caringly raised three sons, Terry, Jay, and Jim, and was a proud supporter during her husband’s educational career in several Indiana communities, culminating as Superintendent of Schools at Mooresville. She was a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir for years. She enjoyed traveling, attending Broadway musicals, and was an enthusiastic spectator at her sons’ many sporting events through the years. Lois will be fondly remembered by all for her sweet and compassionate manner. She loved unconditionally and had a special ability to make you feel better after having been in her company.

Born in 1929, Lois grew up during the Depression and World War II. When her father Willie could not find work at home, he took a job in 1940 on construction of powder plant in Charlestown, Indiana. In order to keep the family together, he bought an old-fashioned school bus, parked it next to a truck bed, and fashioned living quarters for the family. Having lived through those modest circumstances, Lois cherished family and appreciated the many blessings we enjoy.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William R. Curry; brother, Richard Justis; sister, June Kinser.

Survivors include her sons, Terry (Anne), Jay (Diane), and Jim (Donna); sisters, Phyllis (the late Fred DeFord) and Jane (Stewart) Spencer; grandchildren, Melissa (Scott) Coxey, Amanda (David) Brown, and Brian Curry; and great grandchildren, Evelyn and William Coxey.

In an effort to keep family and friends safe, visitation hours will not be observed. A funeral service will be held Saturday, January 23, 2021, 10:30 a.m., in the First United Methodist Church, 900 N. Indianapolis Road, Mooresville. Those attending will be required to wear a mask and practice physical distancing. The service will be livestreamed by visiting https://www.facebook.com/carlislebranson/. Burial will be at Presbyterian Cemetery, Ellettsville, at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Global General Board Global Ministries, United Methodist Committee on Relief. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Carlisle – Branson Funeral Service & Crematory, Mooresville.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Lois was one of the sweetest ladies I have ever had he pleasure to know. She always had that beautiful smile. Rest easy!!

  2. Mrs. Curry, her wonderful smile, and her being a part of our church choir are cherished memories from my childhood experiences from church. Sending love and prayers to her dear family. She was loved by many.

  3. My heart aches for the passing of Lois, a sweet and gentle spirit, who was and is loved by so many of us, as well as for the pain my dear friend Terry must be feeling during this time of loss. I only wish I could be there for him at this time… Lois played a big role in my early years from 3rd grade on, as the Mother, driver, and sometimes referee for Terry, me and our buddies–at school, at church, and at home. Now I [like so many others] can relish those precious memories that I have of her impact on me and my boyhood. My love and prayers to all the family. God bless you all!

  4. What a wonderful reunion this has to be in heaven with her dear husband, William R. Curry. Lois was always such a gracious, unassuming, & kind lady. I loved her precious smile, and it would always brighten a room. The Curry’s were the best neighbors to my family over the years on Crestwood Drive, & both remained very special to my parents & us siblings even after we kids started our own families. I will always remember the lovely annual Christmas lunches Lois & Mr. Curry would host at their home for the Central Office staff. It is sad COVID-19 kept me from visiting her this past year, however, I have beautiful memories of her for 55+ years. Tony & I loved her & Mr. Curry dearly. We extend our deepest sympathy to Terry, Jay, & Jimmy and their families.

  5. The first thoughts I have when I think of Lois are “lovely, gentile lady.” Singing in the choir, attending school and church events–whatever the occasion–Lois was smiling and kind. Our deepest sympathies to her family. The Bowmans–Mary Lee, Michael, and Julie.

  6. My fondest and best memories of Lois is our road trips to see the Catherine the Great and the Ottoman Turk exhibits in Memphis. We had such a great time talking and laughing in the car on our way to Memphis. She had the best stories and she was the best mother in law ever. She was a joy and a treasure to all who knew her, not a kinder person I’ve known. Sheila

  7. When I think of Lois I always smile. She was a sweet, caring and beautiful lady, inside and out. I will always remember our Christmas luncheons for Central Office and how welcome she made us feel. I loved her and Bill so much and miss him dearly. My heart is so happy knowing they are now together. Our sympathies to you Terry, Jay and Jim. Cherall and Terry Humble

  8. Terry, Jay, Jimmy and family, Your mother was one of the sweetest and kindest people we knew. Always greeting you with a smile. She will be missed. You are all in our thoughts and prayers. Vaughn and Jenny Goss

  9. Lois was an incredible woman and will be missed greatly. Heaven has gained another angel and is a little brighter now. Our deepest sympathy for your loss. Sending prayers and love to all. John and Joanie Emhardt

  10. So sorry to hear of Lois passing, the Lord welcomed her with open arms , one of his most faithful soldiers coming home for eternal rest. She was one of the sweetest people I ever met. Raising three fine men a true blessing to know her
