Born in: Wabash, Indiana
Resided in: Indianapolis, Indiana

Craig Alan Burton, 72, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away at home on October 26, 2026. Born on September 29, 1954, in Wabash, Indiana, Craig was the son of the late Wallace and Jeraldine Burton. He lived a life filled with hard work, music, family, friendship, and a love for creating memorable experiences for those around him.

Craig graduated from Carol High School in Fort Wayne in 1972 and went on to attend Ball State University, where he initially studied mathematics education. During his time there, an unexpected opportunity to work sound and lighting for a band introduced him to the world of live entertainment. He quickly discovered his passion for the stage and changed his course of study to radio communications. While at Ball State, Craig was also a member of the swim team, where he earned the distinction of holding a school record in butterfly stroke. Throughout his life, he cherished the friendships he made during his college years and enjoyed keeping in touch with his Ball State friends.

Craig went on to join the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) Local 30, beginning a career that spanned more than 40 years. He also founded CAB Productions, his own production business, which he operated for 50 years. His dedication and talent in audio production earned him a Grammy Award in 2001 for his work on the album LIVE by Governor Davis and the Blues and Ambassadors, a remarkable achievement in a career devoted to bringing music to life. His love for his craft extended beyond the work itself; he took great pride in teaching his sons the trade and sharing the stagehand profession with them. Working alongside his sons brought him tremendous joy.

Throughout his career, Craig worked sound and lighting for concerts, performances, and presentations throughout Indiana. His work gave him the opportunity to meet numerous famous singers and artists, as well as to be part of major events, including Super Bowl XL in 2006. In addition to his work in live entertainment, Craig was employed by Indy Parks, from which he retired 15 years ago. Whether behind the scenes at a concert or working alongside his family, Craig brought dedication, knowledge, and a steady, dependable presence to everything he did.

In 1986, Craig married Robin Thompson, and together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished traditions. They shared a love of line dancing during the 1990s, always making sure to dress up for the occasion. They also enjoyed decorating their lawn for Halloween each year, a tradition that grew into memorable Halloween parties at the Burton home. After Robin’s passing in 2011, the memories they created together remained an important part of Craig’s life.

Family was at the heart of everything Craig did. He was a devoted husband and father who was deeply involved in his sons’ lives as they grew up. He attended their events, participated in PTA activities, and coached their baseball team. He was the kind of father who showed up, remained present, and made sure his sons knew they could count on him. Calm, levelheaded, and steady, Craig offered support and guidance without needing to be the loudest person in the room. He also had a special gift for choosing presents, taking great care to find just the right gift to make someone feel loved and appreciated.

Craig believed holidays were meant to be celebrated and that the best gatherings included music, good company, and hot dogs on the grill. He loved bringing people together and making ordinary occasions feel special. He and Robin were members of the Circle City Van Club, enjoying attending competition events and sharing that interest with fellow members. Craig had an eclectic taste in music, a fondness for old war movies—especially those starring John Wayne—and a deep appreciation for the friendships that lasted throughout his life. More recently, he especially enjoyed going on cruises with his family, making new memories with the people who meant the most to him.

Though Craig’s time here has come to an end, the music he helped bring to life, the lessons he passed on to his sons, and the traditions he created with his family will carry his memory forward for generations to come.

Survivors include his children, Josh Burton (Chelsey), Chris Burton (Sam Brandys), and Emily Doney (Edwin); sister, Catherine Grudowski; grandchildren, Kelsey Hoge, Alayna Brattain (Josh), Jackson Doney, and Cooper Doney; great-grandchildren, Brayden, Ryder, Wally, Carter, and Briggs; sister-in-law, Lucy Burton; his granddog, Honey; and several extended family members and friend.

In addition to his parents, Craig was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Robin Burton; brothers, Rohn and John Burton; and brother-in-law, Dave Grudowski.

Carlisle – Branson Funeral Service & Crematory in Mooresville is entrusted with Craig’s cremation arrangements. The family will host a Celebration of Life at a later date.

  1. Very sorry to hear of Craig’s passing. He and Robin were staples at Decatur Central, supporting and working tirelessly supporting the Arts by working in and running all the concessions at DC. Prayers for his family at this difficult time, and may he rest in peace and enjoy a happy reunion with Robin.

  2. Craig was such a special part of my time at Ball State and beyond. We had a group of about 10 of us and we shared a lot of cheap Friday night dinners and carousing together. We attended several concerts in Indianapolis and stayed with my parents. Several times when he was doing sound in Indianapolis and I was attending, we met up for a quick visit. Governor Davis was a good friend too from BSU and my husband and I attended several concerts and Craig was doing sound! My heart goes out to all who loved him. He fought so hard to keep working, even when he wasn’t feeling great. I hope Craig and Governor are making beautiful music together. Thank you for your friendship, my sweet friend.
