Durland “Mike” H. Patterson Jr.

88, of Plainfield, passed away peacefully on August 1, 2022 with his loving family by his side. Durland was born in Lafayette, Indiana on September 25, 1933, to the late Durland Sr. & Mary Patterson. Mike graduated from Lafayette High School, Wabash College and went on to achieve his Masters Degree from Purdue. Mike retired from the Indiana State Board of Health after 30 years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Mooresville for over 60 years. Mike was awarded the very distinguished Sagamore of the Wabash Award. To say that Mike loved music is an understatement. He was the music director at church, soloist in the Glee Club at Wabash College, a member of the Navy Blue Jacket Choir, involved in the Symphonic Choir and Indianapolis Arts, Castlewood Chamber Singers, several Barber Shop Quartets, Harmony Opera Club and on the Board of Directors for the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir. Mike also enjoyed wood working and spending time with his family. He had a knack for "teaching". He taught his boys how to treat others by his loving example. He was a patient man and a kind soul.

Durland is survived by his loving wife of 67 years; Sallylou Patterson, sons; Jerry (Joan) Patterson, Bob (Mary) Patterson, Brian (Karen) Patterson and Tim (Angie) Patterson, along with 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and sister; Pamela Morford.

Durland is preceded in death by his son; Scott Patterson and grandson; Christopher Patterson.

A Memorial gathering will take place on Friday, August 5, 2022 at Mooresville First United Methodist Church (900 Indianapolis Rd., Mooresville, Indiana 46158) from 11:00am – 1:00pm. A Celebration of Life Service will be immediately following at the church. Burial will take place at White Lick Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made in Mike’s name to First United Methodist Church in Mooresville.

Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Carlisle-Branson Funeral Service & Crematory, Mooresville.

  1. I’m so sorry to learn that Mike has passed. My parents, Norman and Ruth Harris loved Sunday mornings when Mike would sing a solo. He sang at my wedding many years ago. It’s part of the ceremony that I still remember. Sincerely Norma Redmond

  5. There are some people that one remembers even if they are only part of your life for a little while. Mike was one of those. We both sang with the Castlewood Singers along with his sister, Pam Morford. My sincere condolences to her and Sally. He loved working with wood. I still have a few of the things he made.   6. Work with Mike for many years at ISDH. Praying for Mike’s family and those who loved him.

  7. I knew Mike from our days together at the State Department of Health. He was a very well-respected public health expert in the Sanitary Engineering program and he got a lot of pleasure from his tireless work with the agency’s choir, which he directed. I remember his laugh, too.

  8. I met Mike when we both volunteered to be part of the Indiana State Board of Health Chorus. We had good times at those lunch time practices and the performances. Heaven has gained a mighty voice in the choir.

  9. I Sang bass in a Barbershop Quartet, the Notarizes, with Mike singing lead in 1966-68. Mike had perfect pitch and we never needed a pitch pipe. Great guy, great voice.
