Eleanor M. Roach

November 30, 1932 ~ November 21, 2011
Eleanor M. Roach, 78, Brooklyn, died November 21, 2011. Eleanor was a graduate of Howe High School, Indiana and Butler Universities and was a member of Phi Mu Sorority. She retired from Indianapolis Public Schools after 37 years of dedication and service. Ellie loved to teach gifted and talented students.
An artist, illustrator, author, and authority on Indiana history, she participated in period reenactments at Connor Prairie and also enjoyed the Farmers Day each year in Martinsville. She enjoyed travel and covered most of the United States during her jaunts. Ellie's fondest memories were of her childhood summers at her Grandmother Goody's farm in Martin County. Many of her paintings depict those scenes. She was a Master Gardener and also loved studying genealogy.
Ellie was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and its choir for many years.
Ellie's greatest love was for her dogs. Her constant and steady companions were her coon hounds and golden retrievers. Per her request, please make memorial contributions to One-Paw-At-A-Time Rescue, 191 E. Bunker Hill Road, Mooresville, IN 46158.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Armand and Ruth Holman Roach. She leaves to cherish her memory several close and very dear friends.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, November 30, 2011, 7 p.m., at Carlisle - Branson Funeral Service & Crematory, Mooresville. A private graveside will be held in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis. Visit www.carlislebranson.com to share a favorite memory or to sign the online guest registry.
My husband and I met Eleanor thru a mutual friend of ours, she was very facinating, and her knowledge about history and geneology was very valuable. She had come to our home with one of her dogs, and I enjoyed that very much. Eleanor will be greatly missed, and our prayers go out to her brother and any other family and friends she had. Ellie we will miss you, and so will all your pets. Cheryl & Jim Miller 27 N Pershing Ave. Indianapolis, IN 46222
Ellie was my sixth grade teacher and later, my friend. She was a wonderful person who shared her talents with others — her love of history, pottery, science, archaeology. She loved her animals — at times, perhaps a few too many. But she could never turn away an animal in need, and she was the same with the kids she taught — she cherished them all. I will really miss her.

Ms. Roach was my 6th grade teacher at IPS #80 in 1974. There was a potter’s wheel and a kiln in the art room of the school and she taught me how to ‘throw’ pots and glaze them. Her productions were far superior to the ones I could make. I appreciated her as a teacher and a mentor. Thanks Ms. Roach, RIP. Andrew Noble
The first time I met Ellie, I knew right away I was talking with someome special. Her vast knowedge was amazing. We talked for a few hours that seemed like minutes. Ellie was one of those people that you never got tierd of talking to. We would call one another from time to time and I would always enjoy our conversations. I met Ellie later in her life and I only wished I would have known her longer. My thoughts and prays go out to her family and friends. GOD SPEED Michael Martin
Ellie was an amazing woman. I met her when she first bought her cabin. She lived the life most of us only dream about. Good hunting.
I did not know Ellie personally but I’m touched by how she affected others. It reminds me of the statement, ‘a good name is better than good oil’ (Ecc. 7:1). Ellie has certainly made a good name among many. I only hope that the peace of God and his promises bring comfort to all who loved and admired Ellie. Philippians 4:6,7 & Revelation 21:4
Good-Bye Ellie!
Ellie was my friend since college days at IU. She loved enjoying a party and sharing stories from her many adventures. When she discovered and purchased her property on the hill in Brooklyn, she realized she had found the location of her dreams….rustic and secluded giving her time to enjoy the birds, forrest, and wild animals. She enjoyed the challenge of wilderness living knowing she could always drive down the hill to Poe’s Cafeteria for fried chicken dinner and cherry cobbler. Ellie never met a dog or cat she didn’t love and many became part of her ‘family’. Rest in Peace Ellie.
I first met Ellie in the late 70’s. She was always a kind a loving soul. I enjoyed being around Ellie. She brought more good to the world. I am sorry I did not have any contact with her for so many years now Patrick McCarthy Indianapolis IN
