Ellen May Louise (Smith) Henderson, 70, of Camby, passed away peacefully on May 19, 2026, at the Franciscan Hospice House, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born in Indianapolis on November 13, 1955, to the late Howard and Helen (Wilson) Smith. Ellen graduated from Southport High School and went on to build a life centered around hard work, compassion, and devotion to her family.
On April 17, 1978, she married the love of her life, Gary Lee Henderson. Together they shared 46 wonderful years of marriage before his passing in 2024.
Ellen worked in the aerospace industry for 25 years and was most recently employed with Airtomic in Franklin, Indiana, where she dedicated 11 years of service. She was known for her incredible work ethic, patience, and strength, serving as a role model to everyone who knew her.
Ellen thrived in caring for others. Without hesitation, she lovingly took in and raised her three grandchildren following the passing of her daughter, a reflection of her selflessness and unwavering dedication to family.
She was intelligent, practical, and remarkably resourceful. A natural problem solver with a logical mind, Ellen could teach herself nearly anything — even wiring an entire house from a book. She had a passion for building, remodeling, and designing homes, and some would say she was a “hobby architect”.
In her free time, Ellen enjoyed quilting, reading, and working puzzles. She also dearly loved her dogs, Luna, Shadow, and Bandit, who brought her great comfort and companionship through the years. Above all else, she treasured her family and the time spent with them. Her love, guidance, and quiet strength will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Survivors include her daughters, Angela Nelson (Mitchell), Sarah Henderson (Amanda), and Courtney Henderson; grandchildren, Austin Wampner (Julissa), Dayton Arthur, Trenton Wampner, Madison Arthur, Lorraine Nelson, Barrett Nelson, Kember Henderson, James Henderson, Kaylee Spears, and Joey Spears; 7 great-grandchildren; brother, John Smith (Sharon); and brother-in-law, Jay Martin.
In addition to her parents, Ellen was preceded in death by her loving husband, Gary Henderson; daughter, Amanda Henderson; and siblings, Claudia Martin and Stephen Smith.
In honoring Ellen’s wishes, her earthly remains will be cremated, and the family will host a Celebration of Life in Brown County, Indiana on May 30th, 2026.
Carlisle – Branson Funeral Service & Crematory in Mooresville is entrusted with Ellen’s cremation arrangements.
I miss you. Nothing in this life will fill the whole that you once claimed
