George William Wiley

George William Wiley, age 91, passed at his daughter’s home in Avon, IN on the morning of Tuesday, September 8, 2026 after a lengthy battle with dementia. A former resident of Morgan and Owen Indiana counties, George loved rural living. He was born February 17, 1935 in Charleston, IL to the late James Aden Wiley, Sr. and Olive Leone (Anderson) Wiley. George grew up on a family farm in Illinois raising livestock, baling hay, harvesting and planting crops, and working at the local sale barn where he learned the meaning of hard work.

George was united in marriage to the love of his life, Linda Sue Halsey, on June 20, 1954 in Illinois. They celebrated 69 years of marriage before Sue’s passing in 2023. George and Sue came to Indiana in 1954. George began a career as a livestock order buyer eventually opening his own business, Copeland & Wiley, with his business partner, Wallace Copeland, at the Indianapolis Stockyards. George raised many hogs, maintained a cattle herd, spent many hours in the woods cutting, chopping, and selling lumber. He could identify many different species of trees and could continue to do so in his later years after dementia had robbed him of so much. He also worked at the First National Bank of Cloverdale after leaving the stockyards.

Strong in his faith, he was a member of the Monrovia Christian Church, Gosport Christian Church, and Coal City Christian Church where he was active as a Deacon and Elder. He was also a member of Gideons International, Monrovia Masonic Lodge, and the Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis. George enjoyed his quiet time in the woods, hunting mushrooms, and taking his great grandchildren on four-wheeler rides with his dogs always tagging along.

George was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Sue Wiley; oldest brother, James A. Wiley, Jr.; and son-in-law, Danny Schenck.

George is survived by brothers, John Wiley of Cloverdale and Maurice Joe Wiley (Sandy) of Freedom; daughter, Kathryn Schenck Carlino of Avon; son, Fred Wiley (Janet Murray) of Indianapolis; grandchildren, Joe Wiley, Emilee Fleece (Brayden), Evan Schenck (Lindsey), Kimberly Heck (David), and Kristina Hostetler (Mark); great grandchildren, Khloe Wiley (Dominick Tompkins), Jack Fleece, Aden Schenck, Avree Fleece, Addysen Schenck, Henry Fleece, Calvin Fleece, Daniel Munoz, Austin Munoz, Noah Hostetler, Konrad Hostetler; great great grandchildren, Dominick Tompkins, Jr. and Ava Tompkins.

The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to Jodi Metcalf, Michelle Fitts, and Brighton Hospice for their tender loving care they gave to George and Sue in their final years.

Family and friends are invited to visit on Monday, September 14th from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm at Monrovia Christian Church, 710 Gordon Road, Monrovia. George’s Life Celebration Service will follow beginning at 2:00 pm at the church with Rev. Rob Baire officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Hall/Monrovia.
