Born on March 30, 1924, in Indianapolis, Indiana, Helen was the second of three children of Marvin and Bertha Clark Dix. Her mother died when Helen was two years old, and she spent most of her formative years with her grandparents, John and Minnie Clark, in Centerton, Indiana.
