John William Kennedy

John William Kennedy, 83, of Camby, departed this life on Monday, September 21, 2026 while in the care of Chalet Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Indianapolis. He was born on March 6, 1943 in New Castle, Indiana to the late John William Kennedy and Freda Evelyn (Gordon) Kennedy Prater.

He served his country proudly and honorably as a member of the United States Air Force from 1960 to 1964. A few months before being honorably discharged from the Air Force, he married the love of his life Geraldine “Gerry” Terry on March 17, 1965. They have enjoyed over 61 years of marriage. The family he and Gerry created was the cornerstone of his life, and he took immense pride in their accomplishments and happiness.

John was a respected figure in the correctional industry, serving as a Captain and Shift Supervisor at the Indiana Boys School in Plainfield where he dedicated 36 1/2 years. His commitment to guiding and mentoring young individuals left a significant mark on countless lives. Known for his wisdom, patience, and integrity, John created a legacy of compassion and leadership that will not be forgotten.

In his leisure time, John found joy in the great outdoors, whether it was hunting, fishing, or tending to his yard. His love for nature was complimented by his enthusiasm for watching classic Westerns, especially “Gunsmoke,” which he enjoyed immensely. Of Christian faith, he was a member of the Victory Bible Church in Camby.

He will be missed by his loving family including his wife, Gerry Kennedy of Camby; son, John (wife, Tiffany) Kennedy Jr. of Martinsville; daughter, Cindy (husband, Emilio) Rizo of Camby; step sister, Patricia Scurlock; 7 grandchildren; and 6 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, John Kennedy; mother, Freda Prater; step-father, Harlan Prater; brother, Howard Kennedy; and step-brothers, Harlan Prater Jr., Charles Prater, and Jim Prater.

Indiana Services:
Family and friends are invited to visit on Friday, September 25th from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Carlisle – Branson Funeral Service & Crematory in Mooresville, IN. John’s Life Celebration® Service will begin at 11:00 am on Saturday, September 26th at Victory Bible Church, 13996 IN-67, Camby, IN 46113. There will be an hour of visiting prior to the service at the church and Pastor Tony York will officiate.

Kentucky Services:
Family and friends are invited to visit on Monday, September 28th from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at Gray Funeral Home in Morehead, Kentucky. He will be laid to rest after a graveside service in Click Family Cemetery in Haldeman, Kentucky following the visitation.
