Judith H. Brown

Judith H. Brown, 80, of Mooresville, passed away peacefully at home on August 27, 2026. She was born in Franklin, Indiana, on October 21, 1945, to the late Lyman and Gail (Kellams) Hougland.

Judith graduated from Columbus High School in 1963 and went on to Indiana University, where she earned her Bachelor of Education degree in 1967. Following her graduation from IU, Judith began her career as an addiction counselor, beginning a lifelong dedication to helping and supporting others. She later earned her Master of Social Work from Butler University and completed her counseling licensure work through Christian Theological Seminary.

Judith went on to work as a Family and Marital Therapist for several years before eventually establishing her own private practice, Brown Counseling. She was deeply committed to helping people navigate life’s challenges and was known for her intelligence, compassion, generosity, and genuine desire to make a difference in the lives of others.

She was a longtime member of Mooresville First United Methodist Church and was also a member of Tri Kappa Sorority in Mooresville. Judith believed deeply in giving back and generously supported numerous charitable causes. She frequently encouraged others to look beyond themselves and find ways to help those in need.

Judith was intellectually curious, scholastic, and talented in many areas. From an early age, she embraced opportunities to learn and grow. As a young girl, she was active in Girl Scouts, became a black belt in Judo—a distinction of which she was especially proud—and was a classically trained ballerina. At just 10 years old, she played piano at the Butler School of Music. Her love of music remained with her throughout her life, and she continued to play piano, particularly enjoying the classical works of Beethoven, Bach, Tchaikovsky, and Chopin.

She also had a deep love for animals and supported animal rescues. She enjoyed needlework and knitting, and she loved to travel. Each year, she and her husband, Jerry, looked forward to returning to their favorite destination, Washington Island, in Door County, Wisconsin. She also treasured trips to Sedona, Arizona, and the many memories made along the way.

Above all, Judith was devoted to her family. She was a deeply involved and loving mother who rarely missed her children’s sporting events or extracurricular activities. She took great pride in their accomplishments and was always there to encourage and support them.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lyman and Gail (Kellams) Hougland.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Jerry Brown, whom she married in November of 1972; her children; Michael Jay Brown, Molly Michel (Steve Lambert), Michael Eric Brown (Robin), Jerri Ann Crays (Bill); grandchildren, Kaitlyn Brown, Caroline O’Connor (Steve), Dylan Michel (Courtney), McKenzie Wahn (Patrick), Luke Michel, Noah Crays, Lilly Crays, Claire Crays, Victoria Haley-Brown, Oliver/Olivia Holland (Steve); great-grandchildren, Shannon, Connor, Jack, JJ; and brother, Jace Hougland.

Family and friends are invited to visit on Monday, August 31, 2026 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm in the chapel at Carlisle – Branson Funeral Service & Crematory in Mooresville. An additional visitation will take place on Tuesday, September 1, 2026 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, with funeral services beginning at 11:00 am. Pastor Adriane Rockhill will officiate the service. Burial will take place in Mt. Pleasant Hall Cemetery.

Her life was a gift to many, and her memory will live on through the countless people she encouraged, helped, and inspired.
