Melvin E. Griffith

Melvin E. Griffith, 69, Mooresville, passed away January 14, 2020, in Venice, Florida, surrounded by his loving family. Melvin was born June 9, 1950, in Hardinsburg, Indiana, to the late Miller and Lois (Morgan) Griffith.

He graduated from West Washington High School. Melvin worked for Amtrak for more than 30 years, retiring as a machinist in 2010. He was a member of the IAM Union. A strong family man, he loved watching his family grow as new grandchildren and great grandchildren were born. Melvin was an outdoorsman and took great pride caring for his property; he was quite content on any one of his tractors. He also enjoyed farming, livestock, and gardening. He and his beloved wife, Jan, loved to travel, and he had visited 48 states during his life. He will be fondly remembered by his loving family for his genuine and selfless ways. He was the rock of the family and his legacy will always be cherished.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Melvin E. Griffith, Jr.

Survivors include his wife, the love of his life, Jan, to whom he was united in marriage October 29, 1971; daughters, Lori Griffith, JoElla (Cory) Land, Carrie Cooper, Tracy Zelivetz, and Jennifer (Robert) Woodward; brothers, James (Paula) and Stanley (Donna) Griffith; sister, Geneva (Gary) Holloway; grandchildren, Dillon (Kayla) Livingston, Sydney Livingston, Emma Cooper, Brentt (Amber) Zelivetz, Bradley Zelivetz, Brooklyn Zelivetz, Kristin (Matt) Fenn, and Taylor Woodward; several great grandchildren.

Visitation will be on Saturday, January 18, 2020, 2 to 5 p.m., at the Carlisle – Branson Funeral Service & Crematory, Mooresville. The funeral service will begin at 5 p.m. The burial and committal service will be on Sunday, January 19, 2020, 2 p.m. in the Hardinsburg Cemetery.   1. Carrie, I’m very sorry for your loss. While I didn’t know your dad, I certainly remember your kindness to me and Ki and Tommy while you were at Newby. I especially remember how much you helped me and the boys get through a particularly hard time Fall semester of 2017. It’s hard to lose a parent. You and your family are in my and the boys’ thoughts and prayers!
