Ronald R. Prilliman

May 7, 1934 ~ October 10, 2011
Hello Folks:
Before I creep you all out by telling you I have written my own obituary, let me ask you—who better to do the job than the one who has lived it? This way I can brag about the “good” stuff and ignore the bad and no one can argue with me anymore. This way I can also tell you some of the more interesting things that never get included in obituaries.
I was born the second oldest child of five in a house we called the Grover house, May 7th, 1934, in Protection, Kansas with only a chiropractor in attendance. My parents were Claude L. and Grace Alberta (Carson) Prilliman.
My early education began in a one room school called Bluff Creek, where all eight grades were in the same room. I then attended another one room school called Cimarron from grades 2-5. I graduated from Protection High School in 1952 and went to Iowa where I graduated from the Midwestern School of Evangelism in Ottumwa in 1956. A number of years later, I spent two semesters at Marion College, Marion, Indiana and then transferred to Purdue for two more years where I studied Art, Theater, and education. My oldest children, Chris and Sandi, were at Purdue at the same time. After moving to the Indianapolis area, I studied writing at IUPUI.
My marriage to Barbara began on May 7, 1955. We had five children, but lost a little boy in 1964 due to pre-natal complications. On February 7, 2004, our oldest son Chris died at the age of 47. Our surviving children are Sandi Westfall of Monticello, Bryan Prilliman and Melodie Halstead, both of Mooresville. We have 8 grandchildren and one great grandchild, all of whom I love dearly. My church family, drama, music and art have always been an important part of my life. I have drawn and painted since first grade and in high school became known as a singer and actor. I did not start writing plays until the 1970’s when I wrote several skits and a full-length Broadway style musical. I organized and directed six choirs through the years including a community chorus which traveled and did concerts. I preached my first sermon when I was 17, and it lasted about five minutes. Many people have longed for the return of those days. I preached in 17 churches, seven of which were in Indiana and three of them were intern churches. Often it was necessary to work at secular jobs as well, and they ran the gamut from store clerk to screen printer, warehouse manager and teacher. Some of the jobs I had might surprise a few of you. For example, lifeguard, movie projectionist, construction worker (120 feet up in the air everyday); modeled for J C Penney; surgical technician at Methodist Hospital, farmhand, Personnel Director for Indiana State Office and Psychiatric Attendant.
Through the years I have written over 200 poems, over 60 skits, 30 short stories and a book of devotions. I’ve had several articles, one poem, and a short story published. I taught painting classes for 40 years.
Here are some unusual experiences (in no certain order) that happened to me. I was run over by a car as a child; was struck by a car while crossing the street in Sweden; saw an airplane crash; saw a skydiver fall to their death when their chute didn’t open; had a brother that was murdered on Easter Sunday; had my swim suit ripped off by a ferocious wave – twice in front of a row of spectators; fell off a stage backwards during a performance; got lost while walking in a snowstorm; saved a boy from drowning in a creek.
Of course the most enjoyable and satisfying job I ever had was right here at Mt. Gilead organizing and directing the Drama Ministry and Art Fair. I believe that God put me through all of these phases of life because I was too independent. These have taught me that God is in control and not I. To God be the Glory for using me as a humble servant.
The funeral service will begin at 10 a.m., Friday, October 14, 2011, in The Church at Mt. Gilead, 6019 East State Road 144, Mooresville, with calling there from 4 to 8 p.m., Thursday, October 13, 2011. Burial will be in White Lick Cemetery, Mooresville. Memorial contributions may be made to the Drama Ministry at Mt. Gilead. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Carlisle – Branson Funeral Service & Crematory, Mooresville. Sorry for you loss, Barbra and family. You and Ron did so much. We remember seeing you at the registration table at the MSE reunion. We look forward to meeting again in heaven. Bonnie and Jack Regouby
I did not know your Father but after reading his own obituary I wish I had, sorry for your loss Melodie
What can we say about Ron that hasn’t already been said? Ron was one of the most thoulghtful and talented people we know. We don’t have a favorite memory of him because he was so memorable. He will be missed for all his talents, but most of all as a man of God and the person he was. We are truly sorry for his passing but know he is now with our Maker and he will have his beautiful voice to continue singing God’s praises. We know Ron touched many, many lives, and our’s was certainly among them. He was and inspiration to us, and will continue to be during the remaninder of our lives here on this earth. Seeing Ron again is another thing to look forward to when we get to Heaven. Love in Christ, Bill and Sue Hull
Barbara and family–I have many childhood memories of you and Ron from camp and Rushville Rally in Indiana. I have not seen you since then. But my Dad, Ira Cochran, and I would like to express to you our sincere sympathy at this sad time for you. ‘Cast all your cares upon Him for He careth for you ‘ can be very comforting to you as He holds you up thru this time. May God bless you all. Dale and Cheryl Henry and Ira Cochan
I’m glad to know of the connection (Henry)–that you were a Cochran. I remember now. Thanks for your comment.
I didn’t know Ron personally, but always saw him and spoke at church. Just recently when I asked how he was he, of course, said o.k. He did so much at the church and he will be so missed. He was an inspiration to everyone, and a classy and godly man. I want to send my deepest sympathy to the family. You will be in my prayers.
I didn’t know Ron, but my dad was the two year old boy that he saved from drowning. I am so grateful to him as obviously my family and my children would not be here if it weren’t for him. Ron sounds like a person that I would have loved to have known and wish I could have come to the funeral. Your family will be in my prayers. God Bless You . Terri Newkirk, Overland Park, KS
Thanks for your comment. He was loved by many.
Barbara, so sorry for your loss. Even though this comes to all of us, it is never easy but with the comfort of our great God and Christian friends together with the wonderful memories that will stay with us forever, joy comes in the morning as we realize his love of the Lord. Every time I go to Sharon Bluffs Camp that large painting at the front will carry a memory of Ron. It holds such a tribute to his art and love of doing for others. May God be with you and your family as you make decisions and adjust through this time. Love and pray for you, Marilyn Barber
Bryan and Suzanne and family: I was so sorry to read in this mornings paper Rons passing but know he is having the best time right now as i write this in Heaven! He was a truly remarkable man and full of life and his artestry was beyond! I am sorry i cant get to the calling due to a family obligation but wanted to pass along my thoughts and prayers to you during this time! We know that in just a short while, we all will be seeing him again and Im sure he will be ready to greet us all! Keith Gray Alaska Christian Church
I remember Ron’s beautiful artistry, but also his beautiful voice when he sang ‘Let There be Peace on Earth’ at the funeral of a soldier from our area who was killed in VietNam back in the early 70’s. At the time, Ron and Barb and kids were still in Kewanna, IN, if memory serves me correctly (I also remember playing ‘Ghostie in the Graveyard’ at their home around Halloween time one year!!). My folks always thought so highly of Ron and Barb, and perhaps they were among those welcoming Ron last night when he was ushered into the presence of the One whom he served for so many years. Sympathy and prayers to you, Barb, and your family. May the Healer of broken hearts be very near to you all at this time of departing … until that day when reunion with Ron becomes a reality!
I was very young (probably 2nd grade) when I met Ron. My main memories include how handsome he was and how wonderfully he sang. Our paths have not crossed since I was a teenager so lost all contact. Of course my memories of Barb are most strongly connected with she and Sandra singing – – such incredible harmony. I know my parents loved, admired and respected you and have probably been joyously reunited by now. Barb, (& family members) may sweet remembrances of special times flood your minds and bring comfort. Kin because of Him, Lou Etta Kirk
