V. “Jan” Conway

75, of Plainfield, formerly of New Castle, passed away September 24, 2018 at Sugar Grove Senior Living. Jan was born on October 27, 1942 in Muncie, IN to Benson Brose Conway and Nola (Bush) Conway.

He was a graduate of Muncie Central High School and Ball State University. Jan taught welding at New Castle High School for many years until his retirement. He enjoyed various hobbies including music, racing stock cars, was a private pilot, rode motorcycles and at the age when most folks are slowing down, he ran the New York City Marathon at the age of 55. However, it was music that was his true passion. He played saxophone, drums and sang in several bands over the years.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his daughter; Kerry Gill, son; Chris Conway, 4 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

According to Jan’s wishes he will be cremated. A Time of Celebration of Jan’s life will be held Saturday, October 6, 2018 from 1:00pm- 4:00pm at the New Castle Henry County Public Library Auditorium, 376 S. 15th Street, New Castle, IN 47362.

  1. Mr. Conway Funny,Loving, Caring, You were all of these and more. You meant so much to our family. I am so thankful that we got to spend time with you last summer. You loved our cookouts and family time together. Going to breakfast at Parks with dad and little Jan, are just a few of the memories that we will keep with us forever. Most importantly I want to Thank you for being a great friend to my dad, helping him out many years ago to get the job that he enjoyed just as much as you did, you two men took welding to a whole new meaning for high school kids, and I know that the Career Center is Morning just as we are. As you rest in heaven please note that You Made A Difference not only to my family, but to the Community of New Castle!! Love and miss you!!! ߘ˜

  2. We are so saddened to hear of Jan’s passing. He was a bowling teammate of ours for years. Such a great person. RIP Jan you will be missed.

  3. Sorry to hear of Jan’s passing. He was my vocational welding teacher in 1988. He was a great teacher and really cared about his students. I have been in the welding profession for over 30 years now and I owe a lot of that to him. RIP Jan him

  4. Mr Conway meant a lot to me he helped me a lot on some of the welding I was struggling on my firtst year of welding I had him as a teacher for two years

After spending the last year helping Kerry with her Dad V.Jan Conway, I came to appreciate her care, concern and love for him. Jan had a full life before he became ill and we will all miss him very much. “A bird may fly away yet we can still recall its song.   7. Just wanted to let the family know that I Intended on coming but I am not feeling good today but Mr Conway meant a lot to me I had him 2 years as my welding teacher sorry I wasn’t able to get to make it to the service my prayers are with the family
