William L. Cox

William L. Cox, 90, longtime Mooresville resident, passed away February 4, 2023. Mr. Cox was born August 13, 1932, in Terre Haute, Indiana, to the late Robert Wayne and LaFern Lucille (Stewart) Cox. He married Ruth (Hadley) on September 6, 1952, and she survives.
Bill graduated from Mooresville High School in 1950, where he excelled as a student and in athletics. He lettered in football, basketball, and baseball and was consequently honored for his lifetime achievements in the Mooresville High School Hall of Fame. He proudly served in the United States Navy, and promptly became employed with General Motors when he returned from service. He traveled extensively with his job and devoted 38 years to the company before retiring in 1992 as a manager over engineer installments.
Bill was a faith-filled man. He had been a member of the Mooresville First Christian Church for many years and served as an elder, board member, board chairman, and Sunday school teacher. More recently, he was a member and deacon of Plainfield Christian Church. In addition to church, Bill was strongly devoted to his family. He coached every possible youth league and also assisted in the founding of the Mooresville Junior Football and Softball Leagues. He was also active in the revitalization of the Newby Dome. Bill was an active and very present father, grandfather, and great grandfather – attending sporting events as recently as a few weeks ago. He loved to travel, especially when the family was able to all be together. Bill will be forever remembered for his kindness and always leading by example.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, James R. Cox.
Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Ruth; children, Steve (Debbie) Cox, Rosanne (Greg) Lockwood, Gordon (Sonya) Cox, and Amy (Tom) Cordray; grandchildren, JoBeth Zimmerman, Jamie Burns, Tony Cox, Emily Brewer, Courtney Zike, Kelsie Loveless, Jesse Cordray, Lindsey Cordray, and Jonah Cordray; 8 great grandchildren, Peytan, Gavin Z., Karli, Izzy, Lexi, Bailee, Gavin L. and Hudson.
